Library JournalMurphy has written an engaging history of more than 200 New Orleans restaurants. Through readable, appealing profiles, the author depicts the food culture of the city. Interspersed throughout are single pages devoted to products or foods such as Barq's Root Beer or hot sauces. Finally, several appendixes list the ratings of the restaurants by a panel of New Orleans food experts. VERDICT A great read for travelers planning to eat in New Orleans or those interested in a special city and its food.--Christine E. Bulson
About the Author
Michael Murphy, a book publishing professional, has been a vice president at Random House, publisher of William Morrow, and founder of the literary agency Max & Co. By day two of his first visit to New Orleans in 1983, he knew he was home. He finally moved to New Orleans in 2009, and will never leave.
Michael Murphy has been in the book business since shortly after the Earth cooled (June 8th, 1981). His first 13 years were with Random House, where he was a VP of Sales. He went on to become the Publisher of William Morrow. After Morrow's acquisition by NewsCorp and merger into HarperCollins, Michael set up his own literary agency, Max & Co. He and his family left New York and moved to New Orleans in 2009, the year the Saints finally won a Super Bowl. Michael had felt the city was "Home" the first time he came to the city in 1983. Now here, they are never leaving.
EAT DAT, the story-filled portrait of New Orleans' restaurants, food carts, pop-ups along with chefs, waiters, & oyster shuckers, is conceived as the first of a New Orleans Trilogy, or Dat-Rilogy. HEAR DAT (New Orleans music scene) and FEAR DAT (VooDoo, vampires, graveyards, & ghosts) are to follow. These three areas are the primary reasons New Orleans draws over 9 million visitors each year.
EAT DAT is brought fully to life by over 50 stunning photographs by Rick Olivier
Just spent four days in New Orleans. Just before leaving I found "Eat Dat" in Idlewild, a very fine travel bookshop in Flatiron, New York City. Based most of our meal choices on Murphy's excellent book. And was particularly good to have when 1st choices were booked out. We found his reviews detailed, entertaining and entirely accurate. And his concise overviews and digressions turn it into much more than just a restaurant guide. I hope he has the option to update it at least biannually but as of this time (Feb 2014) it is 100% relevant. If you want to maximise your trip to New Orleans, even if you are a frequent visitor, buy 'Eat Dat'.

Our son lives in New Orleans, so we've had multiple opportunities to spend time there. I was surprised by how many of the different types of restaurants featured in this book we've been to, and I found that Mike Murphy's descriptions smacked of honesty (at times brutally so), let the reader know when to expect and appreciate more atmosphere than food (and vice versa), and what foods to focus on at each place. There is also an interesting backstory provided for most of the restaurants, and seemingly not always the "official" one!
This will be a handy tool for anyone trying to find their way among the myriad culinary choices available in this city. Consider it a concierge you can take with you! At the very least, consult the "Reason to Go" and "What to Get" annotations after a restaurant's listing prior to heading out.

Michael Murphy's Eat Dat New Orleans is so much more than a restaurant guide: its a cultural study of NOLA through its food and its food creators--its a tremendously great read for anyone who has been to New Orleans or is planning a visit or anyone interested in NOLA's diverse cultural from afar. The profiles of those who work in the food industry--not just the top chefs, but folks working in tiny, neighborhood places--create such a pungent sense of place, its like you can smell the cooking in every page! Murphy is such a great writer that it reads like top-notch, lovingly investigated memoir. Truly a love letter to the city's culture.

I have always thought Someday I ought to go to New Orleans... but it wasn't until I read Eat Dat that I now HAVE to go to New Orleans. Mr. Murphy's descriptions of the food, the restaurants, the people make this book not only a great read but put New Orleans high up on my bucket list! Thank you Mr Murphy for not only writing a wonderful book of the the places to EAT DAT, but for giving me a real taste of what I am missing.

This is without a doubt, my favorite book about food that i've ever read. Mr. Murphy does a great job of informing the reader about the top restaurants in and around New Orleans, and he does so in an honest, detailed manner. He also talks about the history of many of these restaurants, and lets you know if they are worth visiting, or if they are tourist traps. A very fun and enjoyable read, and if you are planning a trip to N.O., a book you absolutely should have with you.

I am having fun reading this book and I know it will come in handy when I go to New Orleans next time. I am from New Orleans and I am enjoying reading not only about the restaurants but also the other information the book gives you.
