"Strodder's love of Southern California's famous theme park shines in this essential reference book. . . . Complete in every way. . . fun to read. . . . Essential for a Disney collector."  —Library Journal

"At over 500 pages it's a grand collection of the history and trivia of Disneyland, all nicely organized with concise entries for just about everything that has been installed, exhibited, removed or considered for the Happiest Place on Earth." —www.MiceAge.com

"True to its title The Disneyland Encyclopedia documents the smallest snack cart, the shortest lived shows, the favorite restaurants and the beloved attractions inside the Disneyland Park from its 1955 opening. . . . It would be difficult to find any physical element of Disneyland that is not documented in the book's entries." —www.BetweenDisney.com

"The real achievement is having 57 years of Disneyland history in one book." —www.YesterLand.com

"His attention to detail shows and it is very important in a work of this caliber. . . . An indispensable tool for the Disneyland fan and researcher." —www.MiceChat.com

I am a longtime fan of Disneyland, but for some unknown reason I have a fascination with the Disneyland that existed before I was born. My earliest memories are from the mid 70s going as a child. This book lets me relive some of my earliest memories, such as eating on the Pirate ship that is now replaced by the Dumbo ride in Fantasyland. No one else seemed to remember it existed, and this book confirms I'm not crazy, listing all the crazy short lived stores, rides and other entertainment that has graced the park since its introduction. Its also enjoyable to read the background on so many bygone attractions and wonder what it would have been like to experience them first hand. The book goes in to great detail about some things and not so much on others. The longest entries are maybe only 3 or 4 pages long with the majority of them being around half a page. I'm sure this is a constraint of what info is available. Overall it is a good read, and the short entries make it easy to read the book in short bits here and there. The info is all solid and written in an entertaining way. If I had any complaint, it would've been for more pictures which seem to be sorely lacking. Maybe half the entries have a single image associated with them and some of the longest might have around 4. This would've likely driven up the page counts and the cost, so at the price I paid here on Amazon I've very happy with the book I got. Recommended.

Whether you're a casual Disneyland visitor or a hard-core Disneyland fan, you'll love this book. This incredibly detailed and comprehensive encyclopedia has about 540 A-Z entries (dozens more than the first edition in 2008), 50 sidebars of entertaining information, and 350 new photos that show off the topics. There's a lengthy index, a long bibliography, an appendix that groups all the entries together in different ways, and amazing maps with captions for each "land" so you can locate everything (even the things that are no longer there). All the expected buildings and attractions are here, of course--the Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, etc.--but so are all the small shops and forgotten attractions from Disneyland's past. Plus, there are dozens of entries for things like the themed Trash Cans, the unique switchback Queues, the colorful Fun Maps, obscure TV shows and movies that show Disneyland, and much more. Some of the entries are over a thousand words long, and everything is written in an entertaining, informative, and at times humorous style. Amazingly for a book that came out in June 2012, there are updates right up to April 2012! A must-have for every Disney bookshelf.

Within the first few pages, I quickly realized that this book was going to become a fast favorite and an indispensable research tool. Even with the book in my collection for less than two weeks, I have reached for it multiple times to answer questions or start some research. What caught my attention immediately was Strodder's easy and entertaining writing style. For the most part, you are not going to read an encyclopedia from cover-to-cover; with the Disneyland Encyclopedia, I read and savored each entry.

Any reference work about a pop culture icon will reflect the author. Chris is a die hard fan and spent years putting together this encyclopedia. I have seen a few complaints that Chris added entries that might seem kind of strange, but once you read the segment, you understand why he added it. There have also been questions about his nomenclature. After reading the book, I can tell you that Chris is extremely thorough; he collected and presented every variation of every name he ran across. When necessary, he lists where the different names were published. His attention to detail shows and it is very important in a work of this caliber.

This review might seem a little too glowing; other reviewers have taken issue with a few of Chris' entries or his choices. But I challenge you to put a work together that encompasses so much of the vaunted theme park's history. He might have missed a few things, but it is still a darn good reference work and one that I suggest wholeheartedly.

Chris also throws in some call-out boxes with different facts that just don't quite fit as an entry. Some of the ride times, the lengths that various trains traveled and the attractions that debuted by decade.

How can you bring back the excitement you felt upon entering the Magic Kingdom as a child? Read through this book. From the origins, the building, the latest upgrades to the Matterhorn and its famous bobsleds, to the themed trash cans, Chris Strodder's "the Disneyland Encyclopedia" covers every detail of the theme park from its opening to the present. The format and index make it easy to find specific entries, or just have fun browsing. I learned all kinds of things about Disneyland, even though I have been going there my whole life. Newcomers and aficionados alike should get this book!

I looked for Disney trivia books before but didn't want to spend $30 on one at Disneyland and the others just weren't up to par, containing useless facts and info that even a five year-old could deduce. This book contains information on every single ride and attraction disneyland has ever known, including the attraction's history and some unique facts. The only downside is that it is in black and white. Having more pictures and some color would have definitely been a nice addition.
