Editorial Reviews

Review

"The book is a remarkable blend of calligraphy and art; an illuminated manuscript that bears comparison with The Book of Kells and William Blake." Guardian.co.uk "It's true importance, however, will be to the western intellectual tradition as a whole." New Scientist "...a magnificent facsimile edition.." Salley Vickers, The Times "Now edited by Sonu Shamdasani, this is an exquisite facsimile. Jung's pioneering work on dreams and associative creativity comes to fulfilment in this intensely personal and revelatory study." Classics Christmas Round-up 2009 The Times

About the Author

Born in 1875, C. G. Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and innovative thinker whose most influential ideas include the concept of psychological archetypes, the collective unconscious, and synchronicity. He is the author of numerous works, including Memories, Dreams, Reflections and Man and His Symbols. He died in 1961.

Sonu Shamdasani is a preeminent Jung historian at University College London and the author of C. G. Jung: A Biography in Books. He lives in London.

John Peck has taught literature at Princeton, Mount Holyoke, Skidmore, and the University of Zurich, and worked as a Jungian analyst in New England for fifteen years. The author of Collected Shorter Poems and Red Strawberry Leaf, he has translated Luigi Zoja, edits for the Philemon Foundation, and lives in Connecticut.

Mark Kyburz, Ph.D., specializes in German into English scholarly translation. Over the past twenty years, he has translated numerous books and articles in various areas of the humanities and social sciences. He is currently working on the lectures that C. G. Jung delivered at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule from 1933 to 1941. He lives in Zürich.

Customer Reviews

I wanted The Red Book in hardcover, with all the spectacular illustrations.
John F.D. Taff
It is quiet approachible in content and very captivating as a book that covers a topic of interest that is worth reading.
Nigel Tully
Then closely read Shamdasani's very fine introductory essay that prefaces Jung's text in this Reader's Edition.

Before reading any further, note: This a review of the READER'S edition - and the Reader's Edition DOES NOT include the facsimile images (art and calligraphy) of the original "Red Book: Liber Novus." I suspect many of those who ordered the book unaware of this will be surprised and disappointed. This distinction was not made clear in Amazon pre-publication information. If you wish to see the original book in all its visual glory, pay the price and order the complete folio-sized facsimile edition.

So, why then publish, and why purchase, a "Reader's Edition"? Why is the this edition important, even essential?

Because the text of "Liber Novus" (as Jung formally titled his "Red Book") is really more important than the art. Jung experienced and recorded his visions and then composed his draft manuscript of Liber Novus before beginning on the art. The art and calligraphy came later, they were composed over the following 16 years or so. The text - compiled principally between 1914 and 1915, with a last section added in 1917 - is Jung's primary record of his extraordinary odyssey across the threshold of consciousness, and into the heart of mythopoetic vision. As he said: "This inner world is truly infinite, in no way poorer than the outer one. Man lives in two worlds." This is the journal of Jung's exploration of the inner world - and it ranks as one of the most important journeys of exploration in the record of human exploration. Dr. Shamdasani, who spent thirteen years editing Liber Novus for publication, has strongly suggested that one should read the text before even looking at the images. I agree.

This is a great book.

I had not read Carl Jung since reading Man and His Symbols decades ago and loving it. Over the years I have seen references to Jung in a wide range of publications so I knew I needed to return to reading more of his writing. And this holy grail from which many of his ideas sprang is ideal.

I appreciate the effort to create a lower cost version of the large red book.

But I suggest creating another low cost version that includes the illustrations as clearly many others would like. And I suggest the way to save on the cost would be to create that illustrated version without the 123 pages of scholarly comment, prefaces, and extensive footnotes. I would much rather see the illustrations than all those comments by others than Carl Jung. Here is quote from the book that addresses my thinking. page 133, "...since the soul is everywhere that scholarly knowledge is not."

I respect the scholarly effort but wading through 123 pages of it before finally getting to read Jung's words was just too much.

I am amazed at this man's mind. He is brilliant. This book does not have the pictures like the big red book, just the text. The red book with the pictures cost a lot more money. This is still very worthy of your time without the pictures. Don't turn away from this amazing book because of the lack of pictures. Buy it, read it, learn from it, then get the full version later.

To re-iterate - this is NOT the full version with all the beautiful paintings and illuminated text. If you're buying it for the pretty pictures, it's going to cost you more than twenty dollars. Also, ignore any one star reviews that are just complaining because they didn't take the time to read the description and use common sense.

I bought this for what it is, a portable translation of the Red Book. I already own the full sized facsimile version. While that version is inexplicably beautiful, it is impossible to carry, difficult to read for extended periods, and too expensive to let people borrow, let alone touch without washing their hands.

The Reader's Edition is the size and build of a decently made bible. Those who portray this as a con are likely just venting because they didn't read the description and were expecting the full sized color version with illustrations. This is just the translation. But the imitation leather is comfortable, the pages are reasonably thick, a lot of text in a manageable size. This is like a bible you would pay for, not like the bibles that get shoved in your hands at universities and music festivals.

This book travels well, is inexpensive enough to make handwritten notes in, and is much easier to read. The translation in the full-sized version is an ordeal to read though hunched over a coffee table, but this one is portable enough to absorb into.

As for the content, many other reviewers stated it better than I could, but this is a must have for any fan of Jung. This is the primordial soup that birthed the theories that made him famous. The visions are the closest we'll get to the dream journal on Jung's bedside table.

I wanted The Red Book in hardcover, with all the spectacular illustrations. But this will do until I want to spend $150 on a book. Well put together, with a fake leather cover, this is a heady, trippy book filled with some ideas that will explode your head...in a good way.
