This guide is excellent! It has helpful information about the cities along the route and the trail conditions, distances, elevations, etc. Definitely would recomend this for anyone traveling on the Camino Portugues!

We are experience hikers and recently completed the El Camino from Le Puy to Muxia. We used John Brierly's Pilgrims' Guides for Camino de Santiago (St Jean to Santiago) and Camino Finisterre (Santiago to Muxia)segments. Brierley was the most widely used English Language guide on the Camino. While we have not yet used this Portugues guide, it has an identical format. That is, detailed maps of the route, alternate routes, maps of major towns, elevation profiles, waypoints, logistic suggestions including lodging and food options with facility summaries and contact information. In short, a comprehensive walking guide. We used another author's guide from Le Puy to St Jean and it was not as comprehensive.

I bought this updated version to replace my 2006 model. It has a lot more information but is still compact. Great details and I love the coffee icons along the way! Will be putting it to the test in October when I walk the walk!

We went on this pilgrimage in May 2013. This book was the perfect guide. We met several other travelers from various countries and no one had a book that showed the maps in this detail. Great resource guide and used every single day we walked.

Like his very popular -- and virtually life-saving -- guide to the Spanish Camino de Santiago, this detailed, pocket-friendly guidebook lays out a day-by-day walk to Santiago de Compostela, this time from Lisbon. I've used the Spanish trip on a pilgrimage and found it so dependable and accurate that I'd willingly undertake the less-structured Portugal route with Brierley in my pack. What concerns me is not the book but the constant warnings of a difficult route that can be hard to follow and the long daily walks (20 and more miles) he lays out. Is he hinting that accommodations aren't available for shorter days? Regardless, I would not consider undertaking the Portuguese pilgrimage without Brierley for support. My ONLY reason for a less-than-5 rating is this concern. He doesn't directly tell the peregrino whether the long walks are necessary.

I have used John Brierley``s books for the Camino before and this one does not disappoint. For anyone considering walking through Portugal to Santiago Compostela, buy this book.

This is THE definitive guide for the Camino Portugal. Not the book for how or what to pack, or for Camino from other areas. But this is THE guide you want yo carry on the pilgrimage walk. Buy this.
