Editorial Reviews

Review

“Rose Petal Jam took my breath away…”  —Huffington Post

“A colorful memoir, a pilgrimage, a travelogue and a food adventure.”  —Columbia Daily Tribune

“This lovely book makes you hungry for Poland, even when it plays no part in your own heritage.”  —Metro Pulse

“Perhaps the best way to describe the book would be as a declaration of love.”  —Valentina’s Cookbook

“Zatorska’s dual narrative—first as a native, with a child’s perspective, then as a mature adult and somewhat outsider—makes for an almost dreamlike quality where memory and time collide and distort—at once evocative, enlightening and compelling.”  —Food Tripper

My grandmother's family immigrated from Poland in 1913, and though my grandmother was raised in the United States, she preserved certain Polish traditions at home. I grew up with homemade Polish dishes such as pierogi, golabki, barszcz bialy, and a variety of yeast breads and pastries with farmer's cheese, poppyseeds, and fruit. Unfortunately, babcia did not write down many of her Polish recipes. Last year, I was looking for authentic Polish cookbooks that would capture some of her homestyle Polish cooking and stumbled upon the beautiful Rose Petal Jam: Recipes and Stories from a Summer in Poland, so I was very excited to see that "Sugared Orange" was coming out.

"Sugared Orange: Recipes and Stories from a Winter in Poland," is the second in a series of four books chronicling the rhythm (and flavors) of the seasons in Poland. The first volume, "Rose Petal Jam," traced Beata Zatorska's childhood memories and flavors of a Polish summer across different cities including Warsaw, Poznan, Torun, and Zamosc (a town near my family's ancestral city) via her grandmother's recipes.

In "Sugared Orange," we are taken on a journey to Lublin, Warsaw, Krakow, and Lodz, treated to the many scenes of a Polish winter, and invited to participate in winter holidays like St. Nicholas' Day, Christmas Eve (Wigilia), and New Year's. For a young Beata, hard-to-get oranges represented Christmas as well as a taste of the exotic; Beata's grandmother used to make sugared orange peel every winter and "the perfume of orange peel infused my brain with dreams of tropical lands, orange trees, and exotic adventures for when I grew up.

I purchased 4 copies of Rose Petal Jam, one for myself and the other for my children, and told them that even though this story was written by Beata, they were reading about my life. I grew up very near Beata's home town and left Poland when I was 11 yrs. old her family experiences and mine were exactly the same. I"m so grateful for her eloquence and wonderful writing ability to put to paper what I wish I could. The book is exceptionally well written with gorgeous photography and a must read for anyone wanting a glimpse of what growing up in Poland was like.

Loving Rose Petal Jam so much I kept my fingers crossed that another book would follow and thankfully it did. Sugared Orange continues the experiences of an ex-pat returning to the land of her childhood memories with more amazing photographs and wonderful writing. These books are my treasures and I want more. I've read them and re-read them, many times with tears in my eyes, but also with a longing in my heart for what once was. Beata thank you so much for the gift of those two amazing books and please don't stop writing.
With sincere gratitude.
Elizabeth

This book makes for enjoyable reading. The Amazon product description is 100% accurate. The photos are gourgeous and there are quite a few.

Although this comparison sounds harsh, reading the book feels like the reader is paging through someone's scrapbook. Photos, a few personal notes, a recipe to remember that friend or city, etc. - something to remember the trip or early childhood.

Do note that although this book contains recipes, there are only 47 or 48 of them (out of 312 pages). They are easy to make.

But recipes are not the scope of this book. If you are looking for an introduction to Polish cuisine or a book on Polish cuisine, you may be disappointed.

The scope of this book is to tell the story - visually and orally - of an ex-patriate returning home for a visit with family and the country of birth - this time during the Winter around Christmas.

Beautifully presented book which is stands on its own as a document of a past era. It evokes a bitter sweet sadness for lost times not only for the author but for all families. It's a very pretty book and the recipes look fantastic. I will definitely try something out for Easter this weekend!
Highly recommended.

If you want to feel like you're being transported back in time and to the beautiful country of Poland, this book is for you. I love that the book feels a bit like a scrapbook with short stories from author's past, beautiful photos and illustrations, gorgeous fonts, and of course tasty recipes. Great as a gift too.

What a beautifully designed book- from the photographs to the text. Saw it first in London but was too heavy to carry home.
