Review

"This amazing book catalogues in clear, direct language the full range of wild edible plants found in California. Organized by ecological region and latest scientific family, it teaches not only a plant’s place on the land but its essential botanical attributes. More than that, Christopher’s lifetime of dirt time experience makes him expert on the edible and nutritional properties of this wonderful flora, so easily overlooked but at our disposal everywhere. I have followed Christopher on endless plant walks and never failed to learn something new and important. Now at last it’s all in one brilliant guide! "

So many foraging books have so many problems, but Nyerges has really hit the right balance with this book. Good, clear color photos and identification descriptions. Just the right number of plants--too many books are so all-inclusive that you can't pick out the plants you might actually find and use from those that are rare finds and not all that useful. Others have almost nothing in them.

His information is accurate, and he wisely includes cautions on plants. (though there was, problematically, no such warning for mustard)

I was sorry to see him leave out a couple of important foraging plants such as artichoke thistle (good idea to get those out of the wild environment by foraging them) and the sages. And be aware that this is not a book of useful plants, just edible plants. Thus, plants with medicinal (eg. horehound) and other practical uses are not included. That's fine. This is an excellent foraging guide overall, and as I said, a big improvement over anything we've had up to now.

By the way, I have no relationship with the author and don't know him. This is just a review from a fairly savvy forager.

This is a second copy, I'm purchasing for my daughter who plans to thru hike the PCT. I believe it will be a huge aid to her adventure. I enjoy this book it has a ton of edible plants particular to California. I have many books of foraging but they almost all cover the entire western states, or the Pacific Northwest which is to broad of an area. The pictures are good, very helpful to the new forager. There are also recipes.

The author said himself he is covering common edible plants that are widespread easily recognizable and identifiable. I agree that is the scope of this book.there are many many other edible plants in California but one book cannot do it all. It will be perfect for my daughter, who is just starting out. He also tells you if there are any poisonous look a Ike's which is very helpful.
