I'm so upset with this book that Im actually writing it on my tiny phone while still in Tokyo rather than waiting to come home, bc today was the last straw.

1) You will waste so much time trying to find things. The book is sooo poorly written. For ex, they use pictures on their maps, like fork for restaurant or wine glass for nightlife, but the pictures are often times completely wrong. The maps will reference you to pages to discover more info, these pages are also often wrong, or the item you want is hidden in some other text and super hard to find because it has no bolded font or anything. Overall the book is littered with typos that are super misleading and confusing, its poorly organized, and many directions are super confusing! We would waste half an hr trying to find places.

2) their pricing guide is horrible! They recommened a yakitori place and claimed it was in the 2yen pricerange, this means around $20-$40 a person. We go there and the place doesnt list prices and at the end find out the average is more like $75-100 a person and its a michelin star restaurent and has been since 2010... We had the 2012 edition of the book... Therefore they should have known and mentioned the price range bc no michelin star restaurant is $20-40. Its upsetting bc the food wasnt even good. Infact none of the recommended food has been good or within a decent price range. I'm convinced lonely planet is getting payoffs for their recommendations.

We bought this book and the kyoto book because from an intial glance they had the info we wanted, but they both are so hard to read and have such crummy suggestions we ended up relying more on our Fodor book.

Tldr; Book is poorly written with multiple typos and confusing directions. Suggested food is all expensive or not good. Buy Fodor's instead.

I have bought maybe 25 or 30 Lonely Planet guidebooks before (my husband and I love to travel), but this was the first I bought for use on an e-reader. And unless something radically changes, this was also the last time I will ever buy a Lonely Planet guidebook for use on an e-reader. It is difficult to navigate through the book and the tiny, grainy maps are horrendous.

I used to live in Tokyo 15 years ago, and I've been back every year since (at least once a year). I got this guide to see if there was anything new that I haven't seen/done. The destinations mentioned are all great places to go, but good luck finding many of them. The directions are horrendous. I'm used to finding my way around Tokyo, and even for me some places were hard to find, so I can't imagine how it would be for a first-timer trying to use this book! In some cases, all they needed to do was add a FEW words to the directions and that would have made all the difference in the world.

That said, three stars for the cultural/historical commentary, and it does a good job highlighting the must-sees. The kindle version is attractive and user-friendly (except for the too-simplistic maps).

I don't know, is there anything better out there right now? Maybe not. It's not garbage, I did enjoy reading some of it. It's just so frustrating when you waste hours trying to hunt down locations that could have easily been explained in the guide.

I found this guide to be quite helpful on my trip to Tokyo and it led me to some wonderful eating places. It took me a few days to realize how the addresses worked and even with the book there were one or two places I could not find but overall it made for a much more interesting trip. I found it helpful, after the first few days, to just take pages out of the book instead of the whole book when I was going around but overall, a great resource.:-)

I had never been to Japan before, and was going to be in Tokyo for several days vacation in October 2012, so I needed a guide to help me get oriented. This book had a good balance of overview of the city for a newbie like me (springboard for me to do more research of what I wanted to do), and some more detailed information for someone who's been to Tokyo before. Handy size and nice photos too.

An easy, well-written practical guide to help anyone visit Tokyo for the first timer or repeat visitor. We went to visit our son who had been living in Hokkaido for 4 years teaching school, and in the past 6 months has moved to Tokyo working for LINE, as an interpreter and translator. So he helped us immensely, but the book eased my fears over our first trip there, and gave practical tips for my husband and me when we were dining on our own or shopping at Seibu or negotiating train travel to meet friends for lunch. Overall, I will keep this book, as an easy reference on a myriad of questions and variety of topics. I especially like the neighborhood maps and info, as our son is moving today to a new area if Tokyo and I could check it out. I would recommend this book to any traveller to Tokyo as an easy reference with many practical benefits. Also, an exuberant writing style, sprinkled with humor intended to help acclimate anyone to this ancient culture with ease and grace.
