The latest edition of THE NEWCOMER'S HANDBOOK FOR MOVING TO AND LIVING IN SEATTLE is a great book on Seattle for people relocating to the area, but non-relocators will find it just as enjoyable. It includes information on all of the schools, radio and TV stations, supermarkets and other food stores, shopping malls, home goods stores, colleges and universities, and other stuff people will need to know to make their move to the Seattle-Tacoma area successful, as well as in-depth discussions on all of the city's neighborhoods and suburbs, as well as the city of Tacoma and its environs, including the median home values in each. You should check out the discussions on the island communities of Bainbridge and Vashon, which are home to many writers, artists, actors, and musicians. If you're moving to or planning to vacation in the Seattle-Tacoma area, or are simply interested in different regions of the country, THIS IS A BOOK THAT YOU DEFINITELY SHOULD NOT PASS UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Greetings,

I bought this book because we (husband + two kids) may be relocating to Seattle in the coming months. I found the book useful, but I think it is oriented more to DINKs (dual income, no kids) than families with kids. Be aware that the author assumes that 350-400K is "affordable" (which is not unreasonable given the reality of the real estate market there), and devotes a lot more space on these and on higher-end unique historical neighborhoods--understandably, because there is more to say about them. She provides average commute times, which I found really helpful. I think she does a good job accurately characterizing areas and is upfront about crime in some areas.

It was a few weeks ago when I read the book--my copy is dogeared, annotated and underlined. I was in Seattle driving around visiting certain neighborhoods discussed in the book. In general, for busy working families, proximity to retailers, fast foods and child cares is essential, but this sort of "banal" information is not in the book. We also want to know, for example, where the school district boundaries are, especially for the schools that are rated 8 and above. I supplemented the book with notes from my own research--we had our smart phones and tablets with us to check out greatschools.net, Zillow, and google maps as we explored each neighborhood.

Demographic information indicating where the families are moving/living is especially important to me since Seattle seems on the surface to be a place predominantly for singles who like to do yoga, drink coffee and climb mountains, and for their pampered pets (everywhere you see upscale pet stores, yoga places and mountain climbing gear stores). Whale watching is nice, but we want our conveniences!

This book was a waste of money for me. The neighborhood comments were way too general; I was looking for some specific suggestions about where to eat, shop, get a haircut, go to church, etc, and what I got was a list of websites....I could search the internet without spending the money. It would be much better for someone PLANNING to move to Seattle, as the neighborhood and school information might be helpful in choosing a place. We had already purchased and I was expecting usable information for a "newcomer" not a prospective resident.

As a newcomer to Seattle I found this book useful. The information is relevant and easy to access. I suggest this book to people thinking of moving to Seattle and to those who are new to Seattle.

So glad I purchased this!!! Very helpful so far. As much as I've been bookmarking websites online, it's extremely helpful to have all the information I need in one tangible place.

Terrific guide for the newcomer! I've come up with ideas and simple knowledge that more recent transplants had not known. Recommended it to my son as part of his new-hire package, and once he saw what this book included, he was sold on the idea.

Well-worth the small investment $$, and a very pleasant read that you can go back to again and again.
