The Rick Steves' Snapshot Milan & the Italian Lakes District is extremely useful, not the least for what it is not. What it is not is a thick, glossy, weighty boat anchor of a book to carry around in your bag. The guide's brevity is a great asset, even if the info is fairly standard and straightforward. There are no great insights. But it will get you through day trips and overnights to most of the locations with just enough info to get to what matters, even if you don't have a zillion photos, maps and recommendations. In fact, combining a Rick Steves "snapshot" guide to a limited area with with a good map will probably make your holiday and time spent very rewarding.

Very brief information that I already knew, I will have to purchase another book with more detailed guidance about the locations, with good suggestions. It was more for someone who didn't know anything.

There are more expensive and perhaps more comprehensive tour books of Milan and the Lakes with lots of color photos out there, which could serve as nice references, but this is the book that was light enough to carry as I toured the subject matter of the book. Nevertheless, among the different Italy guidebooks I put into my suitcase, this is the one that proved to have the most practical and helpful information. It could be thicker and more comprehensive, but unless you plan to stay more than five or six days, this will serve a traveler quite well. It was written by someone who actually seemed to have gone to these places since the practical information provided was very helpful. My advice for future editions is that the archeological museum should get a better mention, since it was a fascinating place, and that the neighborhood around Corso Como, which has a lively restaurant scene not far from the Garibaldi Station, should be recommended for nightlife activity.

Rick Steves did a great job of explaining how to get around Milan and what to look for and in what order for the time you have. We loved the trip information for things outside of Milan and how to get to the places like Lake Como and trips to the Swiss Alps day trips which was fantastic. Rick does an excellent job of explaining the what to see highlights of where your going and the hints.
