This book is a collection of *very brief* facts about London. It's arranged in a rather haphazard manner. I think it was designed to capture the attention of children who are used to screen images changing every few seconds. There's jumbles of pictures, and it is very cartoony.
I thought it might pique my son's interest in our upcoming trip to London. He's 11 and finished the book in about 15 minutes (as did I). He said the book was "ok" and that it made him want to visit the Tower of London.
I really wish it had more flow, and that it read in a less chaotic manner. for example one two-page spread discusses immigrants from the Caribbean. The next two page spread discusses Sherlock Holmes (without making it clear that they've transitioned from fact to fiction). The next spread goes back to "fact" with little bits about Trafalgar Square (and real, non-fictional people). The next two pages are about the plague. And then we are back to two pages about immigrants. It's confusing and haphazard.

The "London: Everything you ever wanted to know" is an interesting book to look through. The first thing I noticed is its comfortable size and how nicely it is to flip through. When I first opened it up I was immediately interested because it has many great pictures, and each page is loaded with text inserts, photos, drawings, posters, diagrams... you name it. The London book touches on some great subjects, ranging from the punk scene to Sherlock Holmes to an inside look at Windsor Castle.
There is a good part of the content that is dark, gruesome, and violent, and this is suppose to be a kids book. For example, there is a spread on Jack the Ripper, The Great Plague, and on public executions (which includes awful drawings). There are drawings depicting torture, and several other things that are questionable. But here's my real issue with the book and why I only gave it two stars despite the gorgeous pictures and layout: My biggest problem is not so much that the book contains violent material, but the flippant and callous way violence, wickedness and human tragedy are presented. The authors present suffering as something that is almost funny, almost like a "haha, too bad for them!" kind of attitude. In my opinion, history should be presented with some level of basic human compassion and not merely as gratuitous entertainment where we smirk carelessly at misfortune, minimize evil and then without a care in the world toss the book aside.

The title suggests that it's "Not for Parents" Don't let that fool you. I had just as much fun reading it as did my children. The visuals and descriptions throughout the book made it an informative and fun read. The chapters consist of two pages each, taking various historical land marks and subjects such as the royal family and history of London to a whole new level.
It even includes a chapter on Harry Potter and brings the tourist into the world where the movie was filmed with pictures , illustrations and fun trivia.
Some of the table contents are as follows:
Old Father Thames(history of the river)
Belly Up! (the many foods of London which includes a recipe of jellied eel)
Pass the Army and Navy (the people of Cockney along with sayings and their meanings)
I Spy the London Eye (how the famous wheel works and how it was built)
One Does So Enjoy Being Royal ( history of the royal family with tid bits of famous royals)
It's About Time (all about Big Ben)
Mummies and Mega Treasures (London's museums)
There area total of 94 pages. I want to say it is a quick read but I found myself reading it over and over again I enjoyed it so much. This is a terrific book for those traveling with children and giving them a glimpse of the culture and history of the city. It also is a great book for the first time traveler to give them a quick guide to London.
Lonely Planet has many terrific books for people of all ages. This is a book that will not be left on the shelf but one that you can pick up and read all over again.

Targeted at children, this new series from the Lonely Planet francise introduces some of the world's great cities. The focus is on "stuff that's cool to know" and the books are a terrific introduction to each city. My boys are aged 7 and 11 and they both have really enjoyed these books.
"London: Everything you ever wanted to know" covers a wide range of topics: the history and geography of the city, key tourist attractions, the Royal Family, public transport, literary and historical heroes and Harry Potter movie locations. The book is in full colour with many photographs and illustrations and includes a comprehensive index.
While there's plenty of educational text, it's written and presented in an upbeat and quirky way. Some of the many cool facts that my kids enjoyed reading about are who and where people are buried (and haunt) Westminster Abbey, the Great Fire of London, the London Bridge that was sold to the US, torture and executions in the Tower of London, cockney rhyming slang, a recipe for jellied eels (ugh) and the real life Monopoly destinations.
Whether you're preparing for a trip or just interested in learning more about the world, this is a fantastic addition to a child's library. The entire series is terrific, but this one and the Paris guide are especially good. The London edition seems to have the most humor, which my children enjoyed.
