I must have bought about five maps for our trip and this was by far the best i found.

It slipped very neatly into the back pocket of my security shoulder bag and I'd whip it out in a second for a quick check.

The color code is the same one used on the London Tube maps for easy cross referencing.

Went to London last summer with a bunch of maps and the London MapGuide. I tossed most of the maps and carried this handy dandy with me. It slipped very neatly into the back pocket of my security shoulder bag and I'd whip it out in a second for a quick check. We finally stopped being lost and finally stopped wasting precious time fumbling around as to our location. I also took a compass (another time saver). This map guide is detailed AND gives you the names of the streets on the map -- as opposed to the usual London map that leaves out the names of most streets. If like most tourists you're staying within Zones 1-2, you're wise to take this MapGuide with you.

The London Mapguide by Michael Middleditch was the most used resource I took to London. I carried it with me all the time and used it so often it looked like it was years old by the time I returned home.

The guide includes both a Tube map and information on bus routes, making it easy to plot a Tube run to the general area of interest, then select a bus that will take you to the exact location. The book is a little large for normal pockets but if you wear pants or shorts with cargo pockets it will fit perfectly.

In my opinion, the best feature of The London Mapguide is the color coding of the Tube stations. The sometimes multicolored station name backgrounds indicate, by color, the intersecting lines. For example, the Oxford Circus Station graphic has a light blue, red and light brown background, indicating that the station intersects with the Victoria, Central, and Bakerloo Lines. The color code is the same one used on the London Tube maps for easy cross referencing. Text Information on specific sites, provided in the front of the book, includes map coordinates and the page numbers so you can quickly locate the site on the appropriate map.

There were only two things I found could be improved with The London Mapguide. First, the format may be difficult to use for those not familiar with this type of map layout, but if you have used any of the “Road Atlas” type of map books you will find the layout familiar and easy to use. The other thing is the bus route listings which can be hard to follow. I picked up a map on the bus routes of London for free from some gentlemen at one of the major Tube Stations/Bus Stations and used it to supplement the Mapguide and as a book mark. I also used sticky pointers and page markers to indicate locations of interest and to mark the specific pages I‘d be using during my daily outings.

Okay, so your Smart phone can do all the navigation you need. Really? Then why was I the one who was showing my crowd of several Smartphone users where we were and where to go all the time?
This is a terrific, accurate, easy-to-use, very portable map with lots more useful information than just maps.
I can't recommend it highly enough and will certainly be looking for its counterpart for the next big European city I visit!

This is the 3rd update I have bought of the London Map Guide over a ten year period. Not only is it thin enough to fit in a purse/backpack but the writing is large enough for my over 50 eyes. Once one gets used to the various section it is very easy to use.
Sadly I understand the author has died and this could be the last version.

The London Mapguide served us well. It manages to have all the basics: map, brief description of top destinations, subway map, in a fairly compact booklet. It has dimensions close to the size of an ipad mini, but thinner. We ended up basing our decisions of where to go and when to do it on the front section of the mapguide. It has a surprising amount of information, yet is concise, and is organized into categories: "shopping" "museums" "emergency services" "information centres" "jazz in London" "theatres." Phone numbers are included for the places and services that you are most likely to call. Although the map is divided into separate pages (both advantageous because you don't have a map spilling over your arms, and disadvantageous because you have to flip to another map, sometimes in a different part of the booklet), it allows for very detailed maps with all of the smaller streets labeled (very much of an upside). If you bring one book/map with you, bring this one because all the alternatives are heavier, or less detailed, or lack information about this very busy and sometimes overwhelming city. It can't do everything: for finding a hotel or restaurant reviews, Tripadvisor is still the gold standard, but this book isn't about that anyway.

Pros:
compact, yet has detailed maps
phone numbers for theaters, emergency services
tube map
clothing size conversions
descriptions of destinations with opening hours, plus a little history on the side
map is split up into pages so it is easier to handle
off the grid

cons:
too big to carry in your pocket
map is split up into pages (see Pros)
off the grid, so delays and closures aren't updated
small print sometimes hard to read, but so is Google Maps in full sun

The cons are just intrinsic to the format. Pretty remarkable little booklet, five stars for what it is.
