Great photos, then = black/white, now = color.

Very informative and lots of fun for anyone who lives in Chicago or has ever visited this fascinating city.

I wish it was a smidge larger for a coffee table statement, but overall, it is a great book.

Format: Hardcover
Kathleen Maguire's CHICAGO THEN & NOW is an appealing visual history to the Windy City, utilizing vintage and contemporary photographs to show how the city has changed over the decades. This 2012 edition is an update of the 2005 version, the differences being a different author and, apparently, updated 'now' photographs by a different photographer.

The book consists of pairs of photographs on facing pages, the left page featuring vintage pix of famous city landmarks with the current view of the same locale on the right-hand page. I don't see any particular arrangement, geographic or otherwise. A map would have been helpful.

In any case, there are tons of well-captioned, b&w/color views of Grant Park, the Loop, Haymarket Square, the Biograph Theater, Wrigley Field, the Stockyards, Lincoln Park, Lake Shore Drive, Wabash Avenue, the London Guarantee Building, State Street Bridge, Macy's, Clarke House, the Newberry Library, the Rookery, Palmer House, etc.

Windy City fans should enjoy this guided tour to the fabled city on Lake Michigan. Recommended.

I purchased this book for a friend of mine who is in a nursing home. She had grown up in Chicago and would regularly talk about her experiences there. She had tears in her eyes when she looked at it and I told her she could have it...that it was for her. The beautiful pictures brought back fond memories and she shares them with all her visitors.

Great book. I gave out 10 copies last Christmas and have a stash that I give as hostess gifts. So interesting to see the transformation in our city. Photography is great.

A relative grew up in Chicago and saw it everyday of her life. However, the documentation of change over time of something we love is always fun to see. We as human beings take everything for granted-this forces us to see and appreciate that change and enjoy the amazing progress of humanity in our very own space!

After visiting this great city once again, I decided to dig a little deeper. This book was a perfect follow up to the great Architectural boat tour that everyone says is a "Must do" when you visit.

Great history, great stories and most of all wonderful photos.

This is a must have for your bookshelf.

This book has it all...All the famous buildings and their history all on one page. It's great even if you don't feel like reading. The pictures tell so much.
