I've had this book for a long time and just refreshed it to get the spriral bound version. I was new to off-roading 6+ years ago when I went out to visit a friend in Colorado for the first time after purchasing a truck with 4x4 and skid plates. The book has been immensely helpful for a novice like me, who is willing to take his stock truck on some moderate adventures. I skip the advanced/difficult stuff, so no idea how well those are documented. For what I need, it's perfect. Easy to read and very well documented.

This is a great make over of an old standby. The descriptions and distance way points are spot on. As we drove one trail the detail was so accurate I could almost shut my eyes and let my wife read from the book to guide us. The new color and 3-d mapping really adds to the value of information given. My only complaint was that I didn't have enough time (or a vehicle capable enough) to do all the trails. If you are going to ride trails in Colorado you NEED the "Back Roads Books".

If you are headed into the back country for some offroading this resource is invaluable. Good write ups a d very good and detailed maps. This book plus a GPS and you can find the trails, sights, and your way back to the trailhead.

These books by Charles Wells are great books. They have been the key to many a four-wheel drive adventure for me and my family from Ft. Collins to the high mountains of Durango to the red rocks of Moab. I've even given some for Christmas gifts.

The inclusion of gps coordinates very helpful. Many good, heart pounding pictures. The fact that the author has done the trails in his own jeep a huge plus.

However, in this edition, they've tried too hard. Each trail only gets two pages whether it needs more or not. They've included a separate 3D mapping which has a rolling north orientation. The fonts get way too small. And though the photos are excellent it takes a magnigying glass to see them.

The coil binding uses too small a ring and catches the pages constantly and is impossible to fold back.

Great book, very useful, fun, motivational, but not quite five stars. (The old Moab book I would give 5 stars. Bigger binding, larger fonts and format, favorite trails list.)

Love these books. Nice to find a book that has reviews of the trails. Otherwise you never know where you might end up.

If you are a first time visitor to the area looking for jeep trails you need this book. Next to talking to the locals this book will let you know where to go and gives great directions to the start and along the trails. Only reason I did not give the book 5 stars was from my experience on some of the trails in this book. I found the trail descriptions leaning towards the cautious side maybe a little to much. But on the other hand better this way than to get people in trouble. I'm just being picky here but I will say this series of trail guides belong in your jeep or FWB if you are planning a trip to the covered areas. I guess I've talked myself in to a five star rating for all three of Mr. Wells and Peterson's books.
