Senior Chief Thom Shea has served twenty-three years with distinguished valor. During his career, he toured three wars, ultimately leading a team of SEALs into Afghanistan. Shea earned the Silver Star, Bronze Star for valor, and multiple commendation medals for valor. He was selected to lead the famed SEAL sniper course and was principal leader of research and development for the SEALs. Shea has retired from the SEALs and lives in South Carolina, with his Spartan-wife, Stacy and their children.
Before leaving for combat in Afghanistan my wife, Stacy, made me promise that I would write to my children the lessons I wanted them to carry through their lives in the event that I was killed in combat.
What was initially intended to be a private guidebook to our children has grown into something that transcends all groups and individuals who are looking to perform beyond what they believe possible, to find within themselves that which is Unbreakable.
(Ret.) Senior Chief Thom Shea is the CEO of Adamantine Alliance, a unique leadership and human performance coaching organization. Thom conducts training seminars throughout the nation, developing transformational performance results for various individuals, teams and organizations.
Before founding Adamantine Alliance, Thom served 23 years with distinguished Valor as a Navy SEAL. During his military career he served in three wars, ultimately leading a team of Navy SEALs into Afghanistan in 2009 where he earned a Silver Star, Bronze Star with Valor, Army Commendation with Valor and his second Combat Action Medal. He was hand-selected to serve as Officer In Charge of the famed SEAL Sniper course from 2009 - 2011. During his two year tenure, he transformed the sniper curriculum while successfully increasing both graduation numbers and shooting performance test scores.
In his final tour of duty, Thom served as Senior Advisor and Senior Combat Developer for Naval Special Warfare Group One. He served as Chairman for Research and Development on 11 separate optics and weapons boards from 2011 - 2014 maturing, funding and fielding five technologies.
In his downtime, Thom has volunteered countless hours to charity, raising funds through his athletic events for Special Operations Warrior Foundation and the Chris Kyle Memorial Trust. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Ball State University and a Master Training Specialist certification from the Naval Special Warfare Center. He now resides in Greenville, South Carolina with his wife and three children.
Most people, these days, live their entire lives without ever pushing themselves to their limits and then beyond. What most people consider “beyond the limits” is Thom Shea’s comfort zone. You wouldn’t need many fingers to count the number of people who’ve completed BUD/S, competed in 750-mile races, and at one point, prepared a platoon to inflict as much damage as possible to Taliban bad guys, in anticipation of being overrun. Unbreakable: A Navy SEAL’s Way of Life, was written as a memoir for Shea’s family in case he didn’t survive his combat tours. Written as a request (order) from his “Spartan wife”, Stacy, he weaved together several themes that bring more than the average combat documentary or biography.
The combat action, which would be expected in a SEAL’s book, won’t disappoint. He details his missions with SEAL Team 7’s Bravo Platoon during their tour of Afghanistan in 2009. They are all gripping action stories which make the book a must-read if you love those types of books. I don’t want to give spoilers of the good parts, but several times, the book almost met the intent of becoming the memoirs of a veteran who didn’t make it back.
The book is not all combat action though. He does pass on life coaching to his children and readers. Central to this coaching is the concept of one’s “internal dialogue”, which is your inner voice which guides you through your day. It’s the voice you hear that decides what to have for lunch, or what to do today. Unlike the newspaper which lands on your porch in print and is final, Shea sort of puts thoughts into a word processor and edits them, removing any references to quitting, or any negative language that leads to failure. Ultimately, those words no longer enter your thoughts.Read more ›

I should start off by saying what this book isn't....
It's not slick. It's not like Marcus Luttrell's Lone Survivor. It's not Chris Kyle's American Sniper. And it's not definitely not Richard Marcinko's Rogue Warrior. Each of those was penned in part by others. (Patrick Robinson, Jim DeFelice and John Weisman respectively.) And yes, they are all fine books.
No, Thom Shea's Unbreakable was clearly written by the man himself.
It's a personal memoir, a "letter" to his children in case he didn't return home from battling America's enemies.
It must have been incredibly difficult to write. What does a father want to convey to his son about being a man? What does he want to tell his daughter about being a woman, wife and mother? How does he convey why his sacrificing his life with them was not just a selfish act, but one of love for his family, friends and Nation?
When reading, you can get the sense that the book was compiled from Thom's writing on bits of paper while riding in the back of a cargo plane or email's back home ,from a dusty base in some godforsaken land.
It's why I started by saying the book isn't slick. (It's also why it got four stars from me, and not five - it could have had tighter editing.)
But what it is is honest.
In an age where warriors are no longer glorified, but looked down upon by the politically correct, this book will be hard for them to read. The truth is, after all, a bitter pill to swallow. And the truth is, we need hard men - warriors - to do bad things to bad people.
To read Unbreakable is to get to know who Thom Shea is. A warrior.

I had read several reviews about this book and wanted to see what a Navy Seal would tell his children about life, when he was faced with the possibility of not returning home. This book has been far more than I expected. It is a motivational book, about how we can change our attitude with the words that we use to talk to ourselves. Thom Shea tells his children great pointers of how to get through different situations, and why they need to keep their physical bodies strong. He talks about what was really happening in war from his point of view, and not just the 'body count' that we were getting on our news. He explains how having a strong wife, holding together 'the fort' at home can help a soldier face the enemy with one less thing to worry about. This book should be read by every military spouse, to know how their role at home can make or break a deployment tolerable for everyone in the family. It should be read by every parent, if only to make them think of any important message they want to pass to their children. It is a great read to remind us all, that we have control, in our own minds, to motivate ourselves, whatever we may face.

I bought this book based on a very interesting NPR interview with Shea. I appreciate Shea's service and his concern with the fact that each mission might be his last, however the book, for me, is a little too long on the melodramatic musings. I doubt that I'll finish it.

Like everyone who wears a Seal Trident Shea deserves all the respect we can give him; however, for strictly personal reasons, I truly respect learning the motivational role played by his family relationships it was more information than I really wanted to share.
