Born and raised in the northwest, Lars W. Johnson’s passion for absorbing geologic beauty developed early when the family took a trip south to Portland, Oregon, just in time to catch Mount St. Helens erupt in 1980. Decades, and countless rockhounding trips, later, Lars opened a retail rock shop and organized many fieldtrips, inspiring enthusiasm and inclusivity to those new to rockhounding and a renewed curiosity for locating, collecting, and sharing experiences that seasoned rockhounds could appreciate. A blog quickly spawned to share his accumulated rockhounding information (LarsRocks.com) and exploring, writing, mapping, and cataloguing became his focus. Lars belongs to several rockhounding clubs, including The Northwest Diehard Rockhounds.
ockhounding Oregon: A Guide to the State's Best Rockhounding Sites by Lars Johnson is gem of a book, please pardon the pun. It is very positive and used addition to already large collection of Rock-hounding books. I have many books on rock collecting in Oregon that discuss locations, identifying gems and minerals and where to find them. Many of these books have the same information in them. Not this book- it is TRULY different than the others by far. So what is special about this book? What do I like? First there are close to 100 collection sites discussed in length in this book. The introductory pages contain a Oregon State Map that keys and maps each sites in one big picture. Then the book discusses each of these locations at length. I am quite impressed with how this book is set up. Its an easy book to follow and is super user friendly. I found the introductory pages of Rockhounding Oregon: A Guide to the State's Best Rockhounding Sites by Lars Johnson are extremely clear and helpful. Its nice to know what equipment to bring to collect at each specific site. This rock-hounding book has beautiful pictures with each location discussed. There are large colorful pictures of all of the collection materials with 3 pages of information for on each collection site. I also have to mention the pictures are ones which I can easily relate to. This is EXTREMELY helpful when you don’t really know what to look for and /or if you have never been to that site before. My other Rock-hounding books lack pictures-and if there are pictures they are small pictures that certainly do not look much like the rocks I am looking to find or see at Rock Gem and Mineral shows. BUT NOT THIS BOOK. All the rock specimen pictures this book are quite spectacular!Read more ›

Just picked this book up at Barnes in Oregon and was totally blown away. I have been rockhounding for years and have built up quite a collection of guides - none are as good as this one. Each section contains pictures of the specimens and sites and the quality of the photographs is amazing! There are clear directions, GPS cords and details on nearby attractions and lodging. Also included is information on recommended vehicle types (which is important). In particular, I really appreciated the fact that the author appears to have visited the majority of the sites listed in the book on many occasions. I have read too many field guides where it's clear that the author visited a site once and then included it in the book - that's not very helpful, as it takes numerous visits to build up the expertise required to help newcomers make the most out of trips. Should also mention that there's good coverage of fossil sites, as well as gems. The only bummer about this book is that there's not one for Washington, which is where I live (but I'll certainly be back to Oregon now).

This book is by far the finest book written on the subject of rockhounding in the great state of Oregon or Orygun for them bucktoofed hillpeople folk.
6 mo ago, when I visited my psychic, she told me that I would find the portal in Oregon amongst healing crystals. I only know how to find crystals at the mall, so this book was my ticket to cosmic bliss!!! I waited patiently for the book to be published and arrive and finally, it did!
When I received my copy, I cracked the cover and I felt an energy flowing through me akin to the time I visited the lemurs who grow the famous lemuiran seed crystals in Atlantis below Mt. Shasta. I my crown chakra began dazzling and I was immediately blessed with the ability to find my own crystals which will hopefully grant me the powers to find the gateway to my own Lemuira.
I set out to find my very own portal. I decided to go through this new book, Rockhounding Oregon (the psychic told me to get it to find the portal and now I know why!) one by one and look at every site until I find it. With my new crystal finding abilities, I was sure to blow the lid off the metaphysical and crystal healing communities with my find of New Lemuria!
I don't need to read this book to know it's the best book ever, I can feel it. I'm off on my adventure! I will leave more reviews on my journey!
Namaste!

When u see this book buy it :) for a friend or yourself. It is the best adventuring / rockhounding book ever read. It's somehow even a page turner ? I read it front to back in one sitting & keep coming back to it. Your cell service quits in some of these hunting locations & this book is so clearly detailed u don't feel uneasy about relying on a book for directions ... It's given me a sense of confidence this summer I didn't know I had. Thank u for LOVING ROCKHOUNDING Lars W Johnson & sharing it so beautifully with the world.

The quality of this book is way above any other rockhounding book I have: Color photos of every site, accurate driving directions, good quality paper. I wish there was a guide book of similar quality for California. The new standard is here.
