I have long been a fan of the Michelin Green Guide series to regions in France. The updated Normandy guide is stunning in its layout and in its 462 pages of content, largely focused on Normandy. Other good guides exist--notably Lonely Planet and Fodors...but they treat Brittany and Normandy in the same volume.
Of course, the Dukes of Normandy and William the Conqueror are discussed and there is a good general timeline of history of the region. 2014 is the 70th Anniversary of D-Day so the guide features a very usable section containing a chronology of events of that day and in the few weeks thereafter as the Allied invasion gained momentum (pp 56-9.) We have taken a battlefield and cemetery tour with a military historian and this summary will enable you to do something very similar on your own if you wish to. The guide breaks the region down into logical bits of geography, beginning by dividing the Provence into Upper and Lower parts and subdividing from there. The authors describe each part in sufficient detail so that readers can decide where they might like to visit and what they might like to see. Excellent for restaurant and town review. Gives you a good idea of what to see, what to avoid. I like the $$ rating for the restaurant reviews as well, sometimes I like to splurge on a great restautrant and sometimes I watch what I spend to save up for a big day!
