Reliable, readable Rough Guides Conde Nast Traveller

More About the Author

I have had the pleasure of working for Rough Guides for well over twenty years - and they have been a delight to work for. My travelling started with a broken heart: I was jilted, so I joined the Danish merchant navy and although I did not sail the seven seas (we were confined to the Baltic) this did give me a taste for adventure. I ended up returning to my home town to live - and so far it has been happy ever after.

This guide covers every angle that a guide book should. It is chock full of information from where to stay, what to see, where to eat, how to get around, etc. It includes websites and phone numbers you can call (I'm not sure if the other reviewer got the same book that I did...) It gives history and and very helpful advice. It's not picture heavy, so it's good to have some idea of where you want to go in general first. So use the internet to get a basic plan together and get this book to help you decide on specifics.

It's a bit on the blunt and sarcastic side, but I appreciate that over the feel good books that won't steer you away from tourist traps.

I have been a fan of Rough Guides and travelled all over the world benefitting from their sane and intelligent advice for years now. Having just bought a Kindle I thought I would buy the guide in that format as the books tend to be heavy to lug around. What a clumsy and irritating way to try and use a guide book. The biggest problem here is there is no index. You have to know the area you want to go to and then fiddle around opening all the various links and then try and find what you want. You can't just flick through the book and the maps are too small to be of any use at all. The fault is with Kindle mainly, the format just isn't advanced enough for reference books. There is some great stuff in the guide but finding it is hell!
Buy the book!

I highly recommend this book to anyone visiting Norway. Read about the FjordPass (hotel discount program)... be sure to read the sections about History, Legends and Folklore, and brush up on your Norwegian with the very helpful Language section. You know that feeling you get in a strange city where you see buildings, monuments, storefronts, and transportation signs? That can sometimes be overwhelming. This book's text and maps helped tremendously.

I highly recommend the Rough Guide to Norway! For many years LPs had been my travel buddies. In recent years I am more often forced to choose other guidebooks. I had certain distrust when I bought the Rough Guide to Norway. It turned out to be the best guidebook I ever had! Traveling by car the Rough Guide to Norway was perfect. Good information even about smaller places and always helpful to find the optimal route to drive from one place to the other or to choice the best trails to hike. It seems the author(s) zickzacked thru Norway. So much useful information. And to the contrary of other reviewers I appreciated the good maps. Great job! Well done. But: To my surprise the Rough Guide to Sweden was far away from being a good guidebook at all.

My only complaint with the book is that I wish it had more maps of the areas. Granted you can get maps at tourist information, but having more maps in the book would have made things easier.

I also wish there was more focus on the smaller towns/villages where there are no tourist information areas. It's easy to find things to do in Bergen where there is a tourist office packed full of information. It's not so easy in some of the smaller towns where you'll undoubtedly end up staying at some point even if only to get to some other city. Nor does this guide or any other guide that I've seen suggest roads to take if your driving yourself to pick the more scenic route, that you'll have to figure out yourself.

We bought this book for a long road-trip in Norway, so obviously we needed a lot of advice! It was very very informative, and not 'touristy' which makes it even better, as we wanted to see the real Norway. Useful phone numbers and websites where applicable are also included. It is very honest and won't constantly brag about everything, which is another plus!

Norway is complicated to get around because of all the fjords, bridges, waterways, ferries, etc. This guide does an excellent job of covering your transportation alternatives in a refreshingly honest manner. One of the things I appreciate about the entire ROUGH GUIDE line is that they don't try to put lipstick on a pig. Where Frommer's might say, "If you go, springtime is probably the best time" and ROUGH GUIDES say, "This place is an armpit, avoid at all costs. Do yourself a favor and stay at neighboring XXX, only 10 minutes away". They really tell it like it is, and that is such a timesaver when planning a trip from afar.
