Best Books of the Month

Jim Hinckley is the author of five previous books on Route 66—including Voyageur Press’ Route 66 Backroads, Ghost Towns of Route 66, and Route 66 Treasures—and he maintains a daily blog called Route 66 Chronicles (www.route66chronicles.blogspot.com). Through his books, his travels, and his blog, Hinckley has become an ambassador and historian for all things Route 66. He lives in Kingman, Arizona.
After years of having friends and associates tell me that I was blessed with a gift for telling folks where to go, and with support from my loving wife, I began writing about my passion for lost highways, the road less traveled, the special places found along the way, and the vintage vehicles that once traveled them. To date this grand adventure has manifested in the form of seven books, more than one thousand feature articles for a wide array of publications including Old Cars Weekly, Classic Auto Restorer, Hemmings Classic Car, The Kingman Daily Miner and American Road, and even an interview with Jay Leno. In addition I write a daily blog chronicling the life of a starving artist on Route 66 and wrote a monthly column profiling the independent thinkers of the American auto industry for Cars & Parts magazine. It is my sincere hope that you find my books and articles an inspiration for over coming obstacles, discovering the joy that comes from seeking the road less traveled, and are inspired to make a road trip or two.
Jim Hinckley’s Travel Route 66 is a winner from the cover that displays Route 66 icons to the handy index in the back. It is a nice size for armchair reading or to toss in the car for road trips. Organized state-by-state starting with Illinois, it can be read straight through or you can dip in to find what are the most tempting topics to you. It has detailed descriptions to guide the Route 66 traveler along the road. The book is colorful and well illustrated with bright photos. Its attractive layout makes it easy on the eyes. Hinckley does a good job chronicling the people, places, and the activities of the Mother Road and makes sure that you don’t miss the highpoints or hidden gems along the road. It’s definitely worth the price of admission for this trip down 66 whether you are preparing for a road trip or have a fascination with this aspect of American Culture.

I hope to someday travel Route 66. Until I do, I can use this book to imagine and plan that trip, and learn what I want to see. And when I do make that trip, I'll bring this book along.
