About the Author

Despite brief out-of-state interludes for college, grad school, and a stint as a ski bum, Hilary Nangle has never been able to resist the lure of her home state. She grew up on Maine’s coast, spending much of each winter skiing in the western mountains. Her sense of wanderlust was ignited when she became a whitewater-rafting guide on the Kennebec River, which gave her a chance to explore the central and northern regions of the state. When she tired of her parents asking when she was going to get a real job, she drew on her writing skills and began seeking editorial work. She started out editing professional ski tour publications, and then became a managing editor for a food trade publication and later a features editor for a daily newspaper. She currently works as a freelance writer and editor.

Hilary never tires of exploring Maine, always seeking out the offbeat and quirky, and rarely resisting the invitation of a back road. To her husband’s dismay, she inherited her grandmother’s shopping gene and can’t pass a used bookstore, artisans gallery, or antiques shop without browsing. She’s equally curious about food and has never met a lobster she didn’t like. Hilary still divides her year between the coast and the mountains, residing with her husband, photographer Tom Nangle, and their oversized dog. Both share her passions for long walks and Maine-made ice cream. To follow Hilary’s travels, visit mainetravelmaven.com.

"Moon" books were recommended to us as great books on travel. We are going to Maine and we have never been. We bought the book and love reading about this great state. This book has it all and is the perfect place to start a trip. We feel like we have had a great briefing. It would take much longer than we have to see everything and that is the best reason to get this book, do a little planning and dreaming. We are definitely going to Acadia National Park. Pack the book and have fun in Maine!

I've been using this guide to plan a two-week to coastal Maine and have found it very helpful, with good information on all the sights to see/things to do. I like Moon guides because they don't list a huge number of hotels and restaurants, but focus on the sights. The author has a point of view, which I like, and if you don't you can at least tell when she's expressing her opinion. Even though navigating around this area looks like a nightmare, the book is organized such that I think it'll help.

The unique personality of each town along the coast comes through vividly. I was able to map out an itinerary built around the things that interest me most – rewarding museums, fun shopping, picturesque architecture and dramatic coastal scenery... Those interested in beaches, golf courses and lighthouses will also get the guidance they need in these pages.

The listings and descriptions of lodgings are excellent and offer something for everyone – families on a budget or couples in search of romantic ambience and gourmet dinners. Great restaurants are noted, as well as obscure lobster shacks. There are hotels, bed & breakfasts, historic inns and some campgrounds included.

This is not primarily a picture book, although there are some color photos, but I wanted information, not pictures, so I had problem with this. The mostly black and white photos throughout are enough to convey the charm of coastal Maine. The maps are simple but helpful for planning. You'll still need a real map to drive from town to town.

I bought a handful of other guidebooks, but this is the one I found most helpful.

Excellent book to plan a trip to coastal Maine. Used it for a trip to Bar Harbor and Portland. Book was very helpful in planning outings and finding restaurants! Book is easy to read, laid out logically and fun to read.
