I celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1 -- 3, 1863, by reading Carol Reardon's and Tom Vossler's new book, "A Field Guide to Gettysburg: Experiencing the Battlefield through its History, Places, and People". It is "altogether fitting and proper" to think further about Gettysburg and to review the book on Independence Day, 2013. Carol Reardon teaches at Pennsylvania State University and is best-known for her book on Pickett's Charge,Pickett's Charge in History and Memory and for a book on Civil War military thinking,With a Sword in One Hand and Jomini in the Other: The Problem of Military Thought in the Civil War North (Steven and Janice Brose Lectures in the Civil War Era). Vossler, a retired Army colonel, is former director of the U.S. Army Military Institute and a licensed battlefield guide at Gettysburg.

Reardon's and Vossler's book is arranged as a "field guide" to the battlefield for use for visitors to the park. In many ways, it serves this purpose well. The book is a compact paperback, lightweight and easy to carry, and printed on glossy, sturdy paper. It is organized into 34 "stops" each covering a separate point of interest on the battlefield. The authors provide detailed driving instructions between one stop and the next. They also provide the reader with a precise orientation on the ground, indicating where to stand and where to look to gain an understanding of the military action.

You can take this book and actually tour the battlefields. It will help you know what happened at each stop and even what happened after the battle, which is my favorite part. Well written.

Carol Reardon and Tom Vossler put together a very useful book that has individual vignettes that accompany a section of "What Happened Here?" & "Who Fought Here?" A good book to put in the backpack as one trundles through the field. The stops are mapped out in the book with a short description of the valor that occurred there. Well done with just the right amount of detail.

This book is for the person on the battlefield but not the casual person at home looking for general information. I wish I had it when we were there last time. It will certainly be there for future visits.

The book is a very thorough guide to the battlefield--the user should not expect to cover the book during a single day at Gettysburg. The battle is broken down into phases, so it would be more realistic to cover a single phase (or two) of the battle during a one-day trip. I've been to Gettysburg enough times so that I can visualize and have many pictures of the stops utilized in the tour. I've enjoyed learning more about the battle by just sitting at home and reading the book.

The personal vignettes are a neat feature. They help the reader to appreciate the sacrifices by the soldiers in the ranks. Similarly, the descriptions of the people who owned and/or lived on the contested land give a further glimpse into the disruption sprung upon the lives of ordinary people by the battle.

This is probably the best guide to the Battle of Gettysburg that has yet been written. Again, be advised that it is not a one-day tour of the battlefield; however, it might be possible to cover most of the battlefield in a day by just concentrating on the "what happened here" description for the various stops.

Detailed and well organized.
The battle is broken down into many parts. Each part is explained and accompanied by maps.
What makes it special is each part also details what events were important, who was important, civilian involvement, and several interest stories given for soldiers on both sides.

A must!

This is organized very well. It doesn't cover every nook and cranny of the battlefield, but it covers many of the most important and exciting places to visit.
An excellent starting point for the battlefield. An excellent book.

One can use this guide to tour the entire battlefield from the first day's actions to the last. The orientation maps included
with each stop are wonderful, showing which direction to face and a compass pointer which many guides don't include.
You are told who lived there, who fought there and the casualties, both north and south. One criticism though; the vignettes
are always about soldiers who died. There were, after all survivors and this reader feels that more should be included
than there are. The best thing that I can say is that you don't have to look in the back to find the relevant information about
each days action; it's all in one spot. Absolutely the best field guide to this battle bar none.
