Writing about the outdoors is clearly Craig Romano's calling. The New Hampshire native moved west in 1989 and has made Washington State his home ever since. An avid hiker, runner, kayaker, and cyclist, Romano has written about these passions for over two dozen publications, including Seattle Met, Backpacker, Paddler, Adventures NW, Northwest Runner, AMC Outdoors, Northwest Travel, Washington Trails, and Outdoors NW. He is also co-creator of Hikeoftheweek.com, author or co-author of 11 books, and is currently working on Day Hiking: Mount St. Helens (with Aaron Theisen and scheduled for release in 2015). He lives in Skagit County close to the North Cascades and the San Juan Islands.
Craig grew up in rural New Hampshire where he fell in love with the natural world. A former backcountry ranger in the White Mountain National Forest, ski bum in Vermont, and hiking guide in the Pyrenees of France and Spain; the outdoors are his calling! He has traveled extensively, from Alaska to Argentina, Sicily to South Korea, seeking wild and spectacular landscapes. He ranks Washington State, his home since 1989, among the most beautiful places on the planet and he has thoroughly hiked it, over 16,000 miles worth from Cape Flattery in the NW to Puffer Butte in the SE; Cape Disappointment in the SW to the Salmo-Priest Wilderness in the NE. An avid hiker, runner, paddler, and cyclist, Craig has written about these passions for over a dozen publications, including; Backpacker, Paddler, Northwest Travel, Northwest Runner, AMC Outdoors, Seattle Met, and Outdoors NW. Content writer for Hikeoftheweek.com, he is the author of eight books and co-author of three others. He is currently working on Day Hiking San Juan and Gulf Islands (Mountaineers Books 2014)and Day Hiking Mount St Helens, co-authored with Aaron Theisen (Mountaineers Books 2015). He holds several degrees; an AA in Forestry from White Mountains Community College (NH), a BA in history and a Masters in education from the University of Washington. He lives with his wife Heather and cats Giuseppe and Mazie in Skagit County.
You can't go wrong with any of the hiking guides by Mr. Romano. His latest one, 'Day Hiking the San Juans and Gulf Islands', has also exceeded my expectations. The hikes are varied, the information covers all you need to know, and more. Who knew there were so many hiking options in the San Juans!? There's something about his books that really inspires me to get out of the city and go explore the magnificent Pacific Northwest. I don't consider myself an hard-core hiker, but the Day Hiking series is slowly changing that.
For me, the Kindle format works better, as I usually bring my phone to hikes for taking pictures, anyways.
