Editorial Reviews

Review

"I couldn't put the book down since it covered a lot of interesting short reads. I recommend this book as a start for a quickie read and to take along with you as a guide when you visit Dubai. I thought it was worththe buy as there are very few decent guide books of Dubai." (Book Bargains and Previews 2012-11-00)

This Guidebook To Drinking, Shopping And Spending Obscene Amounts of Money On Tacky Attractions In A City That Pretends To Be The Best In The World is a good-looking but supremely shallow advertisement for Dubai aimed at tabloid readers with short attention spans. It is for people who believe that reading this book alone is an immediate, magic entry ticket to the world of the rich and famous. (Rich and famous Russian mobsters, hyprcritical Wahabis and hedge-fund fraudsters, that is.) It is a cheap investment for package tourists who dream of being part of high society and do not mind being ripped off on bad selections of unverifiable, overpriced consumer products that come without warranty and customer protection laws.

Instead of providing a continuous, logical flow of information this book gives you hundreds of fragmented micro-bits of facts and opinions, many repetitive but appearing four of five times in different chapters. A lot has been said already about the new style of LP guidebooks, most of it very critical, and all of it true. The layout is confusing and unnecessarily complicated. They grey/blue colour scheme makes the book difficult to read. The shameless promotion of ultra-expensive accommodation and restaurant options is snobby and annoying, particularly when the few cheaper alternatives are deliberately hidden among all other text. This guidebook wants to make us believe that spending 320 US dollars per day on sleep, food and attractions is a "mid-range" expense. The chapter sequence is a complete disaster: Hotel lists split per neighbourhood make no sense in a city that has good and fast local transport. The "Survival guide" (Lonely Planet's old "Facts for the visitor"), which should be your introduction to Dubai, comes at the end of the book. The book has seven (!

I give it a 4 star because it doesn't have a very easy to read map.

Also, the book is only in color print for the first a dozen pages, then it's all black and white. For those that wants more pretty photos of the attractions (for to know which ones you'd like to go to) maybe this is not the book for you.

The book isn't that easy to navigate, probably because it doesn't want to sound biased on how it recommends places to go, but for a place like Dubai, you know you want to visit the Burj Al-Arab Hotel and Burj Khalifa, but the information in this book is not as descriptive as I imagined it would be.

It would be a great book if you're doing an intensive, 3 week backpack to Dubai since it has all the directories you need. But who stays in Dubai for that long? If you're looking for a crash course of what to do, where to go in Dubai, maybe this book is a bit too much for you.

The guide has little to recommend about it. Few listing of hotels or restaurants, and many errors. Maps also only approximate and some place locations wrong. Does not provide a lot of the information you need when visiting the area. The section on Abu Dhabi is only a few pages even though the guide name implies it is half the book. The descriptions of some things made it quite clear the author had not visited the place described. I ended up on the web for most of my information. I can't recommend this guide at all.

Travel Guides do NOT transfer to kindle too well. They are better in book form, you need to be able to go back and forth easily.

We spent 5 days in Dubai and used the guide for some basic orientation and for suggestions on sightseeing. It served this purpose. However, I found the guide to be very basic....it does not describe all the sites very well and does not go into depth. Also, it would be nice if it included a few pictures and provided recommendations on on things like "what is the best time to visit the Burj Khalifa", or "which are the good desert safaris" etc.

I wouldn't order a kindle edition in a travel guide again. A book is much easier to mark in and make notes.

It's alright to use it for a short trip to Dubai. The included maps will show better in a paper versjon.
