One of the best ways to enjoy hiking is to have a guide book.
The guidebook Hiking Shenandoah National Park, 4th was the perfect
choice to enhance my visit.

The Hiking Shenandoah National Park, organizes the trails in a lot of ways.
The traditional descriptions of easy, moderate, difficult, length of time
but also location waterfalls, type of terrain, what to wear, loops.
This are helpful things to know when you are a beginner/intermediate hiker.

Hiking Shenandoah National Park is a very good book to help a visitor have
a great experience in the park.

I used this hiking guide on a recent week long trip to Shenandoah. My husband and I are avid hikers and were looking for a comprehensive guidebook that offered a variety of hikes, as well as up to date terrain and trail information. This book did it all! Most of the park's best hikes are catalogued by the authors, and they provide many hiking options to lengthen or shorten most hikes. The book also includes a fabulous "hike index" making it possible to search for hikes based on type, difficulty, or desired experience (such as to see great views, waterfalls or see historical sights). Although my husband and I completed most of the longer hikes in the book, I also imagine that this would be a great guide for a casual hiker or for a family with children, as it offers so many options.

This is a great reference book for someone looking for a strong assortment of trails in the Shenandoah National Park.

The first 14 pages give general information including a brief history, information on weather, fees and permits, hiking with children, safety, and hiking essentials. The hikes are grouped into 5 'regions'(see below) with a short intro to each region. Each hike listed begins with quick reference information- the mile marker, distance, approx. hiking time, difficulty, trail surface, traffic, canine compatibility, maps, and info on finding the trailhead. There is a topographic map along with a brief description that navigates you through the hike. It's pretty straightforward.

The following is a samplling of the content you'll find in the book:

North District (Skyline Mile 0.0 to 31.5)
1. Dickey Ridge Trail, Skyline Mile 0.05
2. Fox Hollow Trail, Skyline Mile 4.6

Decent book, but why not provide coverage for various sections of the AT as well? Still, useful perhaps for identifying and selecting from a multitude of available trails for day hikes. If I lived in the area and thus visited frequentyl, might be a handy reference to keep on my bookshelf; but for an infrequent visitor, better to check out from library.

We've used this guilde extensively over the last four days to take day hikes along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. We picked several excellent one to two hour hikes using this guide. Descriptions and maps are spot-on, accurate, and up-to-date. Most traills in this park are well marked and this guide provides added information and security in selecting appropriate trails. We are now at the easy to moderate level of day-hiking and this guide proved invaluable to adjust our skill level to the trails we hiked. I simply can't recommend this guide enough if you're headed out for a fun day or several days or hiking along Skyline Drive. This guide really does help tailor hikes to your skill level.

Highly Recommended!
