Christina has worked in publishing for fifteen years, toiling away as both an in-house editor (Chronicle Books, Seal Press, Night + Day city guides) and a freelance writer before joining Girl Friday Productions, a boutique editorial and writing firm. On any given day, Christina may find herself editing a historical novel, generating snappy copy for a corporate website, writing a travel piece about one of her favorite cities, or doing market research for a client's book proposal. She loves all aspects of the book business--writing, editing, research, reading, and, of course, other people who share her passion for words. Originally from San Francisco, she enjoyed stints in Seattle and Paris before finally landing in the foodie-hipster mecca of Portland, Oregon, where she lives with her husband and two energetic sons. She loves indulging in dim sum in San Francisco, dress-shopping in Brooklyn, late-night book-browsing at Powells in Portland, and doing just about anything in Paris.
I love these cards! I just returned from a 10 day trip to London and used these cards to plan my outdoor activities. I did 14 of the walks in the deck, and each one was accurate, an appropriate length, and very engaging and entertaining. My only beef is that the walking tours include recommendations of specific establishments to stop at to shop or eat. I did not feel it was appropriate to include endorsements of specific shops - if I am paying for the cards, it shouldn't come with these "ads." Instead it should refer to a number of establishments in a specific location. Other than that, this is a great way to get to know London without using a tour bus or guidebook.

I just spent the entire summer in London and used these cards to explore the city. I was there during the Olympics (which was really fun), but also made the main attractions of London extremely busy. There are tons of walking tours which are off the beaten track and allowed me to see amazing parts of London without feeling overwhelmed by all the other tourists. My boyfriend was born and raised in the city and there where several walks in parts of London that he had never been to. I loved these cards! The cards themselves are super durable, so I just popped them in my purse on the way out the door and they never got beat up. My two favorite things about these cards that made them so user friendly were 1. the detailed maps on the back of each one, and 2. that each walk begins and ends at a tube station, so you never get lost!

Used the Paris city walks and loved it. Wasn't disappointed in the least with the london pack. You'll see areas and neighborhoods you otherwise would not as a tourist. Highly recommend.

I field-tested a few of these on a recent London visit. The cards are thick and can fit in a large pocket; one side has a map, with each journey starting from one tube station and ending at another. The other side has a description keyed to numbered sights along the route. Time is not provided per se as of course you may want to stop and do much more than walk past.
As Christina Henry de Tessan explains, she starts at the city center and then expands this in each direction as the cards progress. Therefore, the spiral of the sequence mirrors what a adventurous visitor may wish to experience once the heart of the City is seen and the sights that the usual tourist wishes to check out are covered. Also, unlike, say, a map online with a walking route, you can avoid some main streets in what can be a very congested and noisy city for some more scenic or peaceful or quirky sights chosen by a real live walker herself.
The features pointed out were well-chosen, and, being personal, arguably idiosyncratic or dining/retail-related, but walkers may want to be shoppers, too. Admittedly, the text on the back had to be edited down and so the descriptions, which are clear and lively, may be supplemented with a proper guidebook. What you get as a trade-off: the gist of a guidebook, and this card pack option offers portability, much less to lug around, and larger scale maps.
