Hardcover: 288 pages
Publisher: Harry N. Abrams; 1 edition (October 14, 2014)
Based in Los Angeles, James Spada is a veteran Hollywood author and journalist and is an expert on the subject, having written three other volumes on Streisand.
I finally got to sit down and spend some time with James Spada's lovely new Streisand coffee table book from Abrams Books.
Streisand: In the Camera Eye easily distances itself from more recent Streisand photo books with its very rare collection of photographs of the subject, as well as the informed and accurate text that accompanies them. Spada is no stranger to Streisand's tale, and his text—not quite a biography, but more like a historical sketch of Streisand's career—illustrates the top-notch photos throughout the book.
Since the introduction states that Streisand is a fine photographer's model, and the book's title even mentions the camera, it's fitting that Spada has included some great quotes from some of the photographers who've worked with Streisand and whose photos are in this book. We hear from Doug Kirkland, Scavullo, Mario Casilli and more.
Spada also sprinkles quotes from critics on the pages of Streisand: In the Camera Eye, which are fun to read in context of the photos they illustrate.
But mostly it's the photos here that impress. The quality and clarity are much better than some of those other photo books out there now. Barbra's clear blue eyes are striking in photo after photo. Spada has collected some rare photos here, too! The scans of Craig Simpson's color negatives of 18-year-old Barbra are revelatory. The Clear Day turban headress photos are exquisite (even a couple I've never seen before!) And some of the 1970s photographs are gorgeous, including Casilli photos of Barbra in her Wet hot tub, and a striking portrait of Barbra in fur during The Main Event.
A handsome hard cover book (its sleeve comes off and reveals a Craig Simpson portrait of Barbra on the cover, too!), I think any Streisand fan is really going to enjoy this one.
