I am a big fan of Eyewitness Travel and buy there books for every place I go to visit. Most people familiar with the brand are aware of its upsides, great pictures, maps and recommendations of where to go.

Although this is a country guide, the majority of people that will visit South America will visit Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. These places are unfortunately lacking the usual eyewitness travel detail and do not break each city down into sections as most of their other books do, including the one for Argentina (which does a great job for Buenos Aires)

I had 5 days to spend in Sao Paulo, and found the book gave me very few indications of where to go aside from a list of sights. I did not get a good feeling like i had seen the city properly, rather had a piecemeal perspective of a few things to do for the first day or two and not much else for the remainder. I am disappointed because I am a huge fan of eyewitness's other books, but this one disappointed.

I am aware that this is a country guide, however it should still give extra attention to the locations the majority of people will visit.

A beautiful, comprehensive overview of Brazil, but some maps are lacking in details. I always have liked "Eyewitness" for their wonderful maps ... however maps, especially for Rio de Janiero could be easier to use. This is a heavy book to carry traveling .... perhaps should have been published as two volumes?

Pros:
- Great illustrations and pictures
- Nice maps

Cons:
- Not as much detail or content as other guide books

Overall:
Its tagline summarizes my feelings for this book, "The guides that SHOW you what others only TELL you." This is a very attractive guide book that hits the major areas and attractions, with great imagery to get you a feel for what you will encounter. What it lacks, though, is a bit of the content and detail for the rest of the enormous country. I think this is a great guide book to start with, but should not be your only resource to the country if you have time to explore beyond the typical highlights.

I am planning a trip to Manaus and into the Amazon jungle. There is some information on the city in this book but very little on where to stay and how to explore the jungle area outside the city. Very little information on jungle lodges and tours. Fodors and Lonely Planet have much more information on this area. Although these need to be supplemented with thorough online searches as none seems to provide enough information to feel one is making good choices before leaving.

I can't remember when I picked up my first Eyewitness Travel Guide.
I love to travel. I enjoy planning weeks or even years ahead. I love reading about the history of the country I'm about to or wish to visit.
Eyewitness makes it so easy to plan your trips. The color coding they use, the drawn maps help you navigate the streets with ease. I once was in Rome, sort of lost and looked at the drawn maps and I recognized one of the buildings on the map. It was great. I learned about the building itself and it got me back on track.

I hope to travel to Brazil soon and I now and then pick it up to look at where I'm going to go.

I also am a writer and use several of these guides as a reference point to use in my stories.

Eyewitness always is my first choice. Always.

I hope you will find them as usefull as I do.

This guidebook has its good points and it bad points. It does NOT live up to the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides for European countries. There is scant coverage of areas outside of Rio de Janiero and Sao Paulo, but the coverage in Pernambuco and Paraiaba is accurate. I like the inclusion of history in the beginning of the chapter for each state, and wish that there was more detail about each city. In combination with the Lonely Planet guide to Brazil (which also has its faults), you can get fairly good travel planning information.

This book is fantastic, it gives history on each place, it's well laid out, pictures are great and more detailed than Lonely Planet.
