William L. Sullivan is the author of 18 books and numerous articles about Oregon, including an Oregon Trails column for the Eugene Register-Guard and the Salem Statesman-Journal. A fifth-generation Oregonian, Sullivan set out in 1985 to investigate Oregon's wilderness on a 1,361-mile solo backpacking trek from the state's westernmost shore at Cape Blanco to Oregon's easternmost point in Hells Canyon. His journal of that two-month adventure, published as Listening for Coyote, was chosen by the Oregon Cultural Heritage Commission as one of Oregon's 100 Books. Since then he has published four novels, two popular Oregon history books, and a collection of short stories, The Oregon Variations, that includes one story set in every county in the state.
The author of three novels and a dozen nonfiction books, Sullivan grew up in Salem, Oregon. He completed his B.A. degree in English at Cornell University under Alison Lurie, studied linguistics at Germany's Heidelberg University, and earned an M.A. in German at the University of Oregon. He reads in a dozen languages, plays the pipe organ, and enjoys backcountry ski expeditions. Sullivan is known in the American West as the author who backpacked more than a thousand miles across Oregon's wilderness in 1985. His journal of that adventure, "Listening for Coyote," has since been chosen one of Oregon's "100 Books," the most significant books in state history. In summer he writes at the log cabin that he and his wife Janell Sorensen built by hand in the wilds of Oregon's Coast Range, more than a mile from roads, electricity, and telephones. The rest of the year they live in Eugene, Oregon, where he volunteers to promote libraries and literature. A list of Sullivan's books, speaking engagements, and favorite adventures is at www.oregonhiking.com .
When me and my wife moved to OR two years ago, we put everything we owned in a storage unit, packed up the camper van, and drove down to the OR/CA border. This began one of the greatest hiking/camping excursions of my life. We had bought several OR hiking guides from a few different authors in order to have good variety. One of these were from Sullivan. His guide won among the three we had purchased. The degree of detail regarding driving and hiking directions proved that he was more than just a naturalists writing hiking guides for the greater PNW. He is an Oregonian and he gets out and hikes these trails more than any of us. We ended up buying three more hiking guides of his that focus on different parts of the state. These guides are THE go to for us on our weekends when we need a new area to explore I highly recommend them. Keep in mind that OR woods are extremely dense and aren't always well traveled. Get a map, a GPS, and always let someone know where you are going and when you will be back. Trustworthy friends and family are good for this, but if you get out as much as I do you may feel like you are a burden to them. Thats why I started homesafeoutdoors.com, a company that can keep track of thousands of itineraries and return times simultaneously. If you don't make it back by your return time, we call your emergency contacts and initiate a search and rescue operation. Have fun foraging everyone!

I was so excited to see Sullivan's book in a kindle format! I own all the print versions but was looking to update to the latest version of Central Cascades. I decided to try the sample first and I'm glad I did. The hike descriptions are the usual great Sullivan style, but his informative drawings are way too small! Yes, you can double tap on them to make them larger, but the low quality resolution makes them difficult if not impossible to read. I hope someone figures out how to improve the map/drawings. I may buy the kindle version anyway, but if the maps were better, this book would be on my kindle right now.

I have a number of hiking books and this is one of the best. We used three of the hikes in May 2014 and found all the directions to be accurate and easy to follow. A great balance of the necessaries - like how to get to trail head and where to park, and the interestings - what you will see on the trail, etc. Also - it tells you the season the trails are generally open and free from snow. I have two other guidebooks to the area that don't tell you that so you could end up driving to a trail head only to find 6 feet of snow in May.... Buy this book if you hike in Central Oregon!

I have three of the four paper editions of "100 Hikes in the Central Oregon Cascades", and when I saw the availability of the Kindle edition I was excited. The print in the books and particularly the small print in the map drawings is challenging for my middle-aged eyes, and I hoped the e-book would let me pinch-to-zoom the maps on portable devices. I almost didn't buy because a previous review specifically addressed this and complained about the size of the maps. Ultimately, I wanted to see for myself and to support William L. Sullivan's affordable pricing model for the Kindle edition -- it was only $10, why not?
I was delighted to find that all the photos in the e-book are in color, and can be double-tapped to fill the screen. The maps as well can be double-tapped to fill the screen, and pinch-zoomed if desired. Yes, you eventually run into limitations of the resolution of the scans, but they are entirely usable to me, legible on screen where I'd need glasses or a magnifying glass to read the smallest print in the drawings in the paper book. Higher-resolution scans would be a nice perk for future editions, but what we have is worth the price of admission.
Now I've always got the book in my pocket on my phone. A no-brainer for $10. A big shout of thanks to William L. Sullivan for sharing all of his research with us, and so affordably on the Kindle platform.

Great, great book! Updated for 2014 which was nice. My son and I headed off to Blair Lake and the descriptions of everything were pretty good including the great recommendation for a little coffee shop in the small town you reach before heading up to camp. They were so tickled to know they had gotten mention in the book! I really like that Mr. Sullivan is conscientious enough to give a shout out to local businesses!

Great book that every Oregonian should have on their bookshelf as a reference for any preplanned or last minute outing. Great for both adult and kid hikes.
