In general my wife and I found this book quite useful during our recent trip to Acadia national park and Bar Harbor. I liked the way the author described each stop along the park loop road, and the photos were helpful in choosing stops. The one fault was that the author didn't emphasize how seasonal the area is. If you go "off season" you are likely to find shops closed and tours unavailable.
We went in the first week of May. There were still quite a few stores and eateries closed. The boat tours for the most part start in mid June. I think one boat tour company started tours the day we left (May 10) So just keep this in mind as you use this otherwise useful book. Oh, and also make sure you budget enough for food. I was glad the author mentioned price ranges!

I met James and bought his book at a Los Angeles book fair. I plan on going to Acadia National Park in a little over a year. Once I started reading his book I couldn't put it down! Not only does he cover all of the "to do" items, but also gives an in depth history and background on everything from lobster anatomy to James Swan (see Swan's Island).

I was planning a one week trip to Acadia, and planned on staying in Bar Harbor. But after reading James' book I think we'll make it a 10 day trip and perhaps move around the island a little to spend some time in one or more of the quaint fishing villages (the "real" Maine).

If you're planning any kind of trip to Southeast Maine or to Acadia National Park, whether just to relax and get away or to explore the island, you absolutely must read this book! It gives you a great appreciation for all things Maine has to offer.

My husband and I visited Acadia National Park with four others for a week in the summer of 2010. It's always hard to plan a trip with a large group. But we read the book beforehand, bookmarked things that sounded interesting, and made advance reservations for a few things so that all six of us would be sure to get a spot. His recommendations for things to do and see, places to eat, etc, were excellent, and all the phone numbers were correct, a big plus! He has recommendations for everyone from hard core hiking enthusiasts to nature nuts to beach bums. I especially liked the fact that he included specific recommendations for things to do on many parts of the island, not just Bar Harbor. We stayed in Southwest Harbor and enjoyed his many recommendations for things to do less than a ten-minute drive away. His section in the middle of the book about island history and wildlife also made for very interesting reading. This trip to Acadia was the best vacation I've had in a long, long time, thanks in large part to how helpful this guidebook was.

This is a great book and a must have if you plan to visit Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. The author, who is also the photographer, writes a very user friendly book. It is easy to read and follow and doesn't bog you down with a lot of unnecessary information. He gets right to the important things to see and do and keeps each description brief but thorough. There are easy to read maps and some interesting history about the area. The pictures are just beautiful. My sister and I just returned from a trip to the area and we referred to the book each day. I highly recommend it!

An excellent overview of Acadia National Park and the surrounding islands. There is a great balance between the geography, history, ecology, and current tourist information and recommendations.

What impressed me most was the layout. The pictures are beautiful. They illustrate the text and places being described well. The maps are excellent quality. There are larger and smaller scale maps so you can get the big picture and then zoom in to a desired area. The hiking maps are topographic and well labeled.

When I think about it this is the first tour book that I read cover to cover. I don't think they can get much better than this.

I'm an avid traveler plus I'm a librarian in charge of purchasing a couple of thousand dollars worth of travel books a year. This series ranks among the best. Great color pictures, solid usable information, and not the type of guide that is obsolete as soon as it is released. Would highly recommend any of Mr. Kaiser's guides as a great overview for getting a feel of the area you plan to visit complete with background and history. My only minor complaint would be that the glossy photos give off a bit of glare in less than ideal lighting-plainer/cheaper paper might be a bit better but the information included is top notch.

This was the perfect book for me to buy before a long-overdue return visit to Mount Desert Island (MDI) and Acadia National Park. I purchase this book and "The Photographer's guide to Acadia National Park" which I gave a 4-star review. It is very rare that I purchase a book and don't dislike at least one aspect of it or wish there was something else covered. I would not change a thing with this book.

This book covered all of the bases for me. I only had time for a short visit and wanted to maximize my enjoyment as well as get some great photos to bring back home. The book did a great job of helping me accomplish both.

What I liked: Pretty much everything. The photography in the book is excellent. The history of MDI, the coverage of the island towns and the ecology and wildlife were all great sections of the book.

The coverage is great if you like adventures like biking, kayaking, mountain climbing, or boat trips. I am a hiker and photographer and the section on hiking with the trail maps was invaluable. I was able to hike 5 of these small mountains in 3 days because I had this book to plan ahead.

The "Quick Guides" were indexes that were printed inside the front and back cover and were great time savers when I wanted to find something quickly. The author, James Kaiser obviously has a tremendous amount of experience with and knowledge about MDI and Acadia.

Don't get this book if you are looking for extensive reviews on places to stay and places to eat. Brief descriptions are included, but this book is more about the incredible jewel of a location and how you can enjoy its many facets.
