"A good guidebook...bound to be useful."
--OLA Hotline, December 2001
--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Inside Flap

For 15 years, local outdoor and travel writer Paul Gerald has been the authority on Portland hiking and has just released a substantial update to 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Portland.

“Portland is second to none in the types of hiking around,” Gerald says. “Everybody asks, ‘What’s your favorite hike?’ And I always say, ‘Well, that depends.’”

Consistently found on Powell’s “Best of Nonfiction” shelf, Gerald has spent the last year researching the guide’s 5th edition. Readers will find the same features that has made 60 Hikes: Portland the hiking guidebook to own: detailed trail descriptions, key at-a-glance information for quick planning, original maps with elevation profiles, and Gerald’s own exhaustive list of hike recommendations.

More About the Author

Paul Gerald grew up in Memphis and went to school at SMU in the middle of the football scandal there. His writing career began in the sports department of the much-missed Dallas Times Herald. He later worked for the Memphis Commercial Appeal and the Memphis Flyer before setting out as a freelancer. Since then, he has written some 300 travel articles for the Flyer, and along the way his work has also appeared in Northwest Airlines' WorldTraveler, as well as Portland's Willamette Week and The Oregonian.

He's also worked in and around landscaping, restaurants, public relations, social work, an amusement park, Alaskan fishing boats, the YMCA, corporate marketing, and as a package handler for FedEx. Such is the life of a writer who really, really wants to avoid having a regular job.

Paul's hiking life started at age 12, when he went to a summer camp in the Absoraka Mountains of Wyoming. He became a trail and road hound at that point, and his hometown of Memphis never looked the same. He's hiked in the Rocky Mountains from New Mexico to Montana, as well as in Appalachia, Alaska, Nepal, and Argentina. In 1996 he moved to Portland to be close to the ocean, the mountains, the big trees, and the coffee shops.

His first book was 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles of Portland; the first edition came out in 2001 and the Fourth in 2010. His second was Day and Overnight Hikes: Oregon's Pacific Crest Trail, also published by Menasha Ridge Press in 2007. And in 2009 he revised Best Tent Camping: Oregon for Menasha Ridge.

He's even become his own publisher, putting out Breakfast in Bridgetown: The Definitive Guide to Portland's Favorite Meal in 2008, under the name Bacon and Eggs Press. The "Second Serving" of that book came out in 2010.

He has greatly enjoyed meeting people using his books out on the trails; he's also grateful that none of them appeared to be lost or angry. He does hope, however, that any feedback will be directed to him at www.paulgerald.com. And he hopes people will continue to enjoy and benefit from the fruits of his labor -- that is, if hiking, eating and writing can truly be called labor.

Over the past 25 years I've bought dozens of Pacific Northwest hiking guides and this is just about the most enjoyable one I've ever owned. It is about the only hiking guide I've ever sat down and systematically read from cover to cover, simply because it was such a joy to read and because it contained so many treasures. The author isn't merely interested in telling you how to get there and how not to miss a turn in the trail, but he shows a genuine love for each of these hikes, pointing out what is amazing about each of them, often giving a little history about the trail or other anecdotes associated with a hike, including personal experiences which are genuinely amusing or informative. I especially enjoy his appreciation of trails through old growth forests, something you don't often see in hiking guides. Most hiking guides seem to get worked up only by big, expansive views, but this author sees beauty and magnificence on all scales. Although I was familiar with at least half of these hikes, I learned about a lot of new ones that I've already started exploring. For example, check out the old growth noble firs along the PCT from Barlow Pass to the overlooks at White River Canyon. These trees are absolutely mind-boggling, not because they're big around but because they grow so amazingly tall and straight. It stimulated me to read more about these trees and I learned that they can soar into such heights with so little girth because the wood is hard and light. No Douglas Fir could get this tall without putting six feet of girth on themselves.Read more ›

An excellent guide for day trips around Portland. The author is an acqaintance of mine and on several occasions I witnessed the care with which he took in making book an accurate guide to Portland-area hiking. Gerald is a great writer and he not only gives you the details of the hike (like clear directions on how to get there, an art all too often lost in Portland hiking books), but puts the hike in a brief desciptive context of history, forestry and asthetics that is rare in a hiking book. The book helps the hiker know more about Oregon and its natural treasures.

I moved to Portland 3 years ago and immediately bought this book (older edition). It has a tantalizing selection of hikes in all the major areas within striking zone of the city.

PROS: I like it's organization -- if I want to drive less than 1/2 hour, look to the Portland section. If I'm up to driving through the wasteland of Gresham, braving Hwy. 26 and it's speedtraps through Sandy/Zigzag, refer to the Mt. Hood section. If it's hot and I MUST soak in some ocean spray, I can look at the Coast section.

I like that it gives you driving time from Portland City Center (Pioneer Square).

It got me out exploring east, west, south and north.

CONS: Lousy lousy maps. Sometimes I wonder why I bought a book with such bad maps. They are just lines without any references, floating in space--no topo lines, no mileage, no vicinity maps. Bare number of photos.

Often, the author only shows a "selected trail", instead of providing a map/mileage of a whole trail system, that would encourage a hiker to design their own route.

Some primo hikes are not covered, but since this book is not meant to be an encyclopedia, there will always be trade offs.

I choose this book because I live in portland and love hiking. I have only gone on nine of the hikes but plan on doing the other 51 hikes. The book gives you a great over view of what the hike offers as well as how difficult it will be. In short if you live in or near portland and love the outdoors you should already own this book.
