I very much liked the way the book was organized. It had detailed info about many different subjects. The info was up to date, and accurate. There were several suggestions of things to do, that I certainly would not have found out about without this book.

I had a great time in Amsterdam and Nijmegen thanks to this guide. They had things to do that I did not know I was capable of, such as the Waterloop tour of Amsterdam Noord by bicycle. Indispensable!

Lonely Planet guides are usually my #1 choice for a guide book, regardless of where I travel. This is the best of several Netherlands' guides I've read. However, this guides isn't as good as the LP books of 5-10 years ago. I'm beginning to rethink my loyalty as LP continues to streamline their books -- I assume to compete with other guides.

While this guide covers the basics on the Netherlands, I find it gives short shrift to many places outside of Amsterdam. For example, having spent several months over the last 3 three years in Utrecht, it's disappointing to see how little was written about Utrecht, the fourth largest city in the country, and one of the best-preserved medieval cities to boot. Also, the bar and restaurant listings are mundane and read as if the recommendations were picked off of other guides. Some excellent, well-known restaurants and bars are not named, and the ones that are, most are not considered that great. Additionally, I wonder if the writer(s) of this section of the guide had ever gone into one of the recommended bars, for surely s/he would have noted the life-sized cow over the bar and made a mention of it in the 2 sentence write-up. Methinks the writer never set foot in the place.

In summary, this guide hits the basics, and does a better than average treatment of the usual travel destinations in Holland, but lacks the depth and breadth that LP used to deliver.

Ive traveled with LP for years - but this was badly organized, outdated reviews and for the first time, I didn't already know the place before I landed in a new city - I expected more.

Don't expect a 2013 guide if you purchase this! Based on this guide we traveled to The Hague expressly to see the Mauritshuis Musem, which the book raves about. Once here, we discovered that it closed in April 2012 fora 2+ year renovation. Given the size of the remodel, it was no doubt planned for long before that. Yet this book is advertised as being published "April 1, 2013." What an April Fools Day joke!

It's a perfectly fine OLD guide to the Netherlands, but it should be sold as such, and priced accordingly.

The maps were terrible. Many streets in the cities of the Netherlands were not even labeled! I got lost several times using their "maps".

I have purchased many Lonely Planet guides for various countries in Europe. They are a great supply of info for planning a trip. When I get a new guide I flip to the back of the index and look up the castle section to see how many there are in a particular country I plan to visit. So I get to the back of the book and there is nothing under castle or under palace or under fortress so I googled castle in the Netherlands and many came up so I emailed Lonely Planet and they apologized and sent me a list of 8 castles that are under their individual names I don't speak dutch so that was great help and a quick reply from Lonely Planet. On the other hand I also purchased the DK Eyewitness Travel book which has more pictures and 37 listings in the index for castles, palaces etc. I was a bit disappointed in my Lonely Planet purchase since they omitted the section out of their index and would recommend you check the book at a book store before you purchase it. Are there really that many castles in the Netherlands and the answer is yes whether they are all open to the public or not well I will have to investigate that but the book that is giving the most info about what I thought I purchased is not this one.
