Review

The Washington Post
says, “The map guide lets you be inconspicuous: it’s as small and light as a novella, and its flip-out maps could pass as a flyer to a cool club.”

“Make sure you never lose your way in a strange city. Each of the Knopf MapGuides captures its city’s pith in a package as small as a passport wallet…”– Real Simple

“Knopf MapGuides are handy, practical and perfect for those of us who are slightly impaired when it comes to map-reading. You don’t have to search a huge crackling sheet with a microscopic index for one of 10,000 dots on the map…The extraordinary quality of the books’ beautiful hues and heavy paper also give these $8.95 guides an evocative quality that stands apart from the glossy, garish look of most travel books.” – Marin Independent Journal

“A good, handy portable item for a quick trip” – San Francisco Chronicle

“We love Knopf’s smart new map guides.” – Travel & Leisure

We took a trip to Paris for Christmas in 2006 and used this book there every day, every time we went somewhere. Since this was our first visit to Paris, I do not know what we would have done without this book! It was perfect for us. The map of the Metro made it so easy to navigate and the fold out maps are so simple to use we did not feel like idiots with a huge map. It was great for when we were on the run. Just pull it out, flip it open and there you are! It also helped us plan our trip since all the major sights are marked and many have little write-ups that tell the times and days they are open. This little book is perfect because it is small enough to stuff into a purse or a coat pocket. If you only get one book, I STRONGLY recommend this one! I'm going to Rome this summer and will definitely buy the mapguide again! Don't worry about the pages ripping either. They are very sturdy, thick pages that didn't tear or rip even after having wine AND espresso spilled on them! Yeah, we are a little clumsy.

My husband and I used this mapguide in Paris in December of 2005 and absolutely LOVED it. It is extremely detailed without being cumbersome and is also very inconspicuous. We even used it several times to design our own walking tours of the City of Lights. We lost it at a patisserie on our last day and actually went back to look for it, because we didn't want to leave it behind. A must-buy for a trip to Paris.

Well OK, not lives, but it made a first time visit to Paris in June 2007 even more wonderful than it already was!

We went to Paris as a family group of eight as the last part of a trip that also included Madrid and Barcelona.

This book and its companion edition on Barcelona were extremely helpful and up to date. The beginning overview easily segues into the separate detail maps of different sections of the city. They are large enough to show street level detail in print large enough to be read without reading glasses. They are easily read in dim light, stiff enough to be read in a breeze and small enough to be somewhat covert (that is, it isn't obvious to everyone within a block that you don't know where you are). The metro and train maps at the back are accurate and a real helpful and thoughtful addition to each book.

The entries on attractions, restaurants, shopping, and music were well written, accurate and up to date. We did not encounter listed places that were out of business or at great variance as to price.

Used this on a family trip to Paris last year. I have been to Paris several times and was replacing an older laminated map. I liked that it easily fits in pocket or purse and does not fold out into a huge map that screams "tourist". The book opens with a 2-page spread of the city and its arrondissements and ends with a Metro map. In between are detailed maps for 8 districts you are most likely to visit. There are brief listings for restaurants, tearooms and shops for each district along with some hotels at the end. It's the sort of thing you carry around daily for reference having read your big tour book at home or at night in your hotel. I'll be looking for this series for my next trip

I travel abroad a lot. This is the best style of map guide I have found.
It's small enough to carry around, but you don't have to open up a full map and figure out how to refold it again while standing in the street.
The only thing it lacks is street listings.

My wife and I spent a week in Paris and this was the book that we carried with us all the time. We walked everywhere, constantly unfolding the map of each section of the city to find out how to get to where we needed to go.

PROS:
1. Compact - fits in purse or jacket pocket. Easy to unfold and refold each map.
2. Excellent map detail - shows all streets, Metro stops, important buildings and points of interest. Also has a separate Metro map.
3. Contains other useful information - not a substitute for a guidebook, but the back of each map provides short descriptions of major attractions, restaurants, etc. This is useful when you're in an area and you want to know what else you should see while you're there.

CONS:
1. Metro lines are not shown on maps - the Metro stops are shown on the street maps, but sometimes it was difficult to relate the street maps to the separate Metro map. If the Metro routes were superimposed on the street maps, this would have been a lot easier (although this may be a difficult thing to do while keeping the maps readable).

I absolutely love this guidebook. Its format is extremely convenient: small enough to fit in a purse or a coat pocket, yet detailed enough to provide most of the information you need. The small fold- out maps cover the entire city and are easy to read. There is information about services such as bank opening times. It lists places to stay, shop and eat according to one's budget (the choices are very good) and of course what to see. My very favorite feature is the subway map in back of the book, a must if you want to get around inexpensively and efficiently. I wouldn't dream of going to Paris without it!
