I received the Lonely Planet book about 1 week before setting off to Peru. I visited Cusco, Sacred Valley (Pisac, Machu Picchu,Ollantaytambo) & Lima, so can only review the parts of the book that deal with these areas as well as the Survival Guide section.

This Lonely Planet guidebook will give you basic information on the area you are visiting. It is not comprehensive & parts are inaccurate. The section covering Machu Picchu is decent & the layout drawing is nice to see prior to a visit (note, however, the guidebook says that you cannot bring in plastic bottles or a walking stick & we did both without question). Additionally, the guidebook does not tell you that there is a stamp lectern near the entrance where you can stamp your passport (very cool). It also doesn't tell you that you need your passport to board the Machu Picchu train to get to Aguas Calientes from Ollantaytambo.

The published photos of Pisac and Plaza Del Armas in Cusco are dated.

I cannot address the hotel information because the hotels that I stayed in are not in the guide. However, as a tourist, while it is nice to get a description of the hotel, information on whether 110v plugs are available as well as free wifi should be included (and is not).

We did manage to eat at Cusco's best restaurant, Cicciolina, and it is spectacular. The guidebook should say that while you absolutely need reservations for dinner, you can walk in for lunch & either eat in the restaurant or the bar area (in the bar area, you can order tapas & sandwiches in addition to ordering off of the regular menu). I would describe the service as Good, but not impeccable.

As for currency, while Peru uses the Sol (S), you can get by with only changing a little bit & use dollars.

Having recently reviewed the Lonely Planet Peru (8th edition) I explored this one as it addressed one of the caveats I mentioned before: the lack of illustrative photos in the other one. Well, now I see why: the photos are in this one! (this is its 2nd edition). I suspect Lonely Planet realized that to gather the succulent amount of information of the original plus photos, was going to be a book out of the normal carrying dimensions the series has. Perhaps that makes sense from the marketing point of view, since, in spite of the overlaps, they complement each other.

In summary, this is a nice book. It contains basic information divided into Highlights (country and regions), the Best by category (shops, restaurants, museums, etc), Itineraries (routes, time frames), and the "Need to Know" details. All of it seasoned with colorful and very illustrative photos (whatI missed from the other release). Since I have not been in Peru for a while, I cannot confirm the accuracy of the logistics, but as someone who grew up there I can confirm the realistic take on its wonders and interesting notes, which give you a good idea of what to expect and how to plan.

This is the first LP travel book I haven't liked or found useful.

To start with, it glosses over the whole country, providing scant information on destinations (in my case, Lima, Cuzco, and Macchu Picchu).

Some advice is outdated and wrong. For example:
1) The website for booking Macchu Picchu tickets, as noted in several travel forums, has been problematic since 2011. I couldn't use it and had to find the Cuzco tourist office instead, for which LP gave misleading directions.
2) The chifa (Chinese food restaurant of which there seem to be hundreds of in Lima) that LP recommends, Wa Lok, served pretty bad and heavily salty food and was dirty, with trails of spilt food emerging from the kitchen. I have no idea why LP chose to recommend that chifa.

The book is also laid out in a confusing format. Want to find restaurant recommendations for Lima, for example? Bounce between some recommendations on pg 55, the remainder on pgs 80-85, and maps on pages 52, 53, 66, 70, 72, 76.

It is too bad there are no better guide books for many places, and fewer still available for kindle. There are only about 20 useful pages: the trip planning, the region overviews, and the maps. And the maps are dreadful. The kindle editions now come with the useful advice to go to another site and download each map as a pdf, or "print all the maps in the guide". The rest of the guide is paid advertising from hotels and restaurants. In the kindle, I find myself forced to thumb through 20-30 pages of worthless adds to get one useful page of information.

I find it hard to believe that I paid $15 for a poorly organized electronic yellow pages. It might be better to buy a hard copy and just tear out the useful pages to take on my trips, or better, forgo guide books and use wikitravel, and just get maps from hotels.

I'd like to say I explored the book for insights about the entire country but I was mesmerized by the section on Cuzco and Machu Picchu. For such a small book there's an amazing about of detail. As always with Lonely Planet books there are lots of great pictures with accompanying information about where to stay and how to get to places but this particular book goes way beyond that with Machu Picchu providing historical data, details about associated sites and sights, and schematic maps with details on each section. They give advice about how to choose guides and how much physical effort is involved. Little tidbits like getting to the site in the morning saving the height of the crowds.

Highlighted sight #11 is Inca Cola. Ya gotta love that. I also was intrigued by the Peruvian textiles, the food suggestions in Lima and of course the section on the Nazca Lines. If you do manage to get to Peru don't miss the treasures that were unearthed in Sipan in the `80s. I saw some of these at an exhibit at UCLA not too long after they were unearthed and they're stunning. "Discover Peru" does a great job at highlighting what is most exciting about Peru but even in its brevity it's almost overwhelming what this country has to offer.

I enjoy the Lonely Planet series in general but I especially enjoy their `Discover' series because it's so packed with pictures, schematic maps of sites, as well as the usual plethora of information that all their series include.
