Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

The Bay Area is home to one of the richest, most hike-able landscapes in the continental U.S. There are a number of "destination parks," places where visitors from all over the world flock to walk among giant redwoods or to whale-watch. "But there are also hundreds of smaller parks unknown to most tourists and even life-long residents," Huber explains.

Many of these hidden hiking gems, Huber continues, can be found right in your backyard. "Thousands of people living in the foothills of Mount Tamalpais, for example, can literally walk from their front doors all the way to the top of the mountain if they like."

Huber finds the 60 best hiking spots within roughly an hour's drive from central San Francisco. By keeping its focus on the immediately local area, this new edition highlights even more of the lesser known hiking parks and open-space preserves -- especially those surrounding the Bay Area's most densely packed cities of San Jose, San Francisco, and Oakland -- while still including major tourism draws, making it perfect for city natives and visitors alike.

About the Author

A native of rural New Jersey, Jane Huber lived in Boston and New York City before moving to San Francisco in 1991. Once she got over the shock of driving a stick shift pickup truck up and down San Francisco's steep streets, Huber began venturing out of the city to explore Bay Area parks and preserves. Seeking to share her hiking experiences with others, Huber created the Bay Area Hiker website in 1999. She and her family live in a San Francisco neighborhood populated with hawks and hummingbirds, where views stretch to Mount Diablo and Mount Tamalpais.

Our new edition arrived yesterday, and we already love it. We first came across Jane Huber's hiking book a couple of years ago (with the previous edition), and it changed our lives. We were new to hiking, so we started off with a close one (Edgewood) which was one of the shorter ones in the book. The great descriptions helped us navigate our way through the Edgewood hike and the many fantastic hikes to follow. 60 Hikes gave us a new appreciation for where we live, and for all of the wonders that are just around the corner, or a short drive away. The book changed our lives, and hiking has now become an addiction for us. Almost every week, we try to get out and do a hike or two from the 60 Hikes book. We have enjoyed some of the hikes many times. Our goal is to complete all 60 hikes. We have, so far, completed 47 from the last edition. Now, we have a bunch more from the new edition to add to our list of fun adventures to come. The new edition comes complete with new hikes and new routes for other hikes. It also has even better mapping and elevation charts than the previous edition. Fantastic. I recommend Jane Huber's book to anyone in the California Bay Area who loves to hike (or is thinking of starting). I also recommend it to anyone who is thinking of visiting the area for business or pleasure. Adding a hike to your trip is a wonderful way to connect to the place you are visiting, and completing a hike from Jane Huber's 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles, will bring treasured memories for years to come. Happy Hiking.

Definitely the best hiking book on the Bay Area. It has everything you could want. All the hiking details you need to get there and accurately gauge whether this is the hike for you on any particular day. Very accurate and detailed, never a problem finding the trailhead or following the trail instructions. Excellent maps. Lots of interesting background material on each hike, and lovely, readable writing.
