I went on this trip with my family last July, then picked up the book. We first saw it at Phantom Ranch on day four of our river raft journey in the Grand Canyon. I had to have the book when we got back. The vacation was the best we've ever taken. I hope to do the trip again sometime in my lifetime. If you ever get a chance I highly recommend it. The book is a glimps from the viewpoint of the river guides, some stories are funny, some poinent, all highly entertaining. I can pick up the book and read any story and it will always bring me back to the canyon. Loved it!

If you've ever been down the river, this is an opportunity to return to those incredible memories that linger in all of us who've been so lucky to have taken one of those rare Grand Canyon river trips.

If you have never been down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, pick this book up and take yourself on an incredible journey. Be careful becoming too enamored with this place, once it has a hold of you, you will be drawn to return time and again. And don't think just because you may have seen the Canyon from above that you know it, you know little until you are down in the splendor, amongst the waterfalls, hiking the side canyons, and on the water becoming part of the history of this incredible place. Short of that, read this book.

I've been a river guide for years in the west and have enjoyed the Grand Canyon on many private trips. I loved reading all of these guide stories. It's short and sweet non-fiction writing, covering many different places and experiences on the canyon. There are disaster stories and animal stories and funny stories... they're just river guide stories. If you're a guide anywhere, or if you like guide stories, or if you're a Grand Canyon person, this book is certainly worth your time.

I first came across this book while on the river and the head boatman started reading one of the stories to us. She didn't get to finish the story so I did on my own. This is a great, entertaining read, especially for anyone who's taken a commercial trip down the river, whether on a motorized trip or on an 18 day dory trip.

Some of the stories are just charming short stories, some are of crazy adventures or adventures that perhaps shouldn't have happened and at least one is a reminder that there is a more serious side to the river. In any case, I strongly recommend this for anyone who loves the river experience.

This book is great. My guides read this on our trip in June and it didnt really mean anything at the time. When our trip ended I really missed my time in the canyon. Reading this book took me back to the canyon. Although the stories didnt exactly pertain to my trip, they brought me back to the same rapids, funny stories, and antics of the guides. It's a great book to anybody who has been to the canyon and wants to bring back lost memories. Deffinately a great read.

For fans of Brad Dimock's books and "The Emerald Mile." I love and worked with several of these boatmen from '72 to '96 including Glen Canyon Environmental Studies. Factor saved our bacon in Crystal by pushing our boat out of the tongue for the hole with his boat and then miraculously pulled in behind missing it himself (he'd been there too many times before). Includes the most succinct version of Factor's trip on the '83 flood. This book should make you get back down there. We need a book by the scientists about the boatmen. That would be colorful.

After taking an 8 day trip down the Colorado River in May 2013, I wanted to buy this book. The guide and swamper read us stories from the book. It was delightful to read and relive the whole river experience. I have passed this book on to the group of people with which we traveled and all are enjoying it. Some of the stories are historical.

I have spent most of my working life, almost spanning 3 decades being a river guide. For me, this selection of stories were ones I could relate to. Some inspired me, some made me laugh, and some made me cry.

More than a book about running rivers, these are the stories of people who lived, at least for a time, their passion. They are stories of love, humor, comradeship and occasionally loss.

I thoroughly recommend this book.
