Editorial Reviews

Review

“As an entertaining, somewhat whimsical glimpse into life with dogs in the 21st century, [Travels with Casey] covers a tremendous amount of ground, literally and figuratively. . . . Denizet-Lewis is warm, often hilarious company." (Bronwen Dickey The New York Times Book Review)

Travels with Casey is a charming, touching, human and humane book. The author’s self-deprecating humor, his keen eye for the truth of the people he encounters, his respect for those who live in what too many others might call ‘fly-over country,’ and his affection for dogs make this a unique book.” (Dean Koontz, author of The City: A Novel and A Big Little Life: A Memoir of a Joyful Dog)

"Book of the Week: The abundance of fun facts makes [Denizet-Lewis's] journey well worth sharing." (People)

"USA Today Hot Summer Author." (USA Today)

"Book pick of 'The Culture.'" (Time)

"Denizet-Lewis is a master at effortlessly weaving bits of research into his narrative. . . . An intentionally intellectual, geographically expansive analysis of dog culture." (Ken Foster The Los Angeles Times)

“I couldn’t stop reading Travels with Casey until I had to walk the dog. It’s an adventure story, a love story, and a brilliant commentary on dog literature from J.R. Ackerley to Cesar Millan. Everyone who has a dog will love this book.” (Susan Cheever, author of E.E. Cummings: A Life)

“Dog people will fall in love with Travels with Casey. . . . Even if you are indifferent to dogs, you will be charmed by this book.” (Amanda St. Amand St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

"Benoit Denizet-Lewis' Travels with Casey is a lot like Casey, the 9-year-old dog of the title—fun, sweet and a little neurotic." (Trine Tsouderos Chicago Tribune)

"Warmth, wit, and self-deprecating humor elevate this journey to much more than a travel memoir. Essential reading for dog lovers and armchair travelers." (Library Journal (starred review))

“A thoroughly engaging and often hilarious investigation of the therapeutic nature of our relationships with dogs.” (Booklist)

“Benoit Denizet-Lewis has written about some pretty strange and fascinating people in his career, but no group is more entertaining than Dog People. Benoit captures this group with warmth and wit in Travels With Casey. Sit! Read! Enjoy!” (A.J. Jacobs, New York Times bestselling author of The Year of Living Biblically)

“Dog lovers will be entranced by Benoit Denizet-Lewis’ Travels with Casey, but so will everyone, because it’s a book about all of us and a book about America. His observations are funny and poignant and the writing is exquisite.” (David Sheff, author of Beautiful Boy and Clean)

Travels With Casey is a fascinating, clear-eyed, must-read dog book. Benoit takes us on a journey into that very sentimental, very American dog-human relationship, and the result is a dog book like no other.” (Alexander Chee, author of The Queen of the Night)

“Casey takes his place alongside Charley and Tulip and Skip as Denizet-Lewis takes his alongside John Steinbeck and J.R. Ackerley and Willie Morris. Travels with Casey is a book for dog lovers that reaffirms why we love them so. And it is a book for misanthropes that will restore their faith in humanity.” (Kevin Sessums, author of Mississippi Sissy)

"This sprightly, entertaining travelogue should find a delighted readership." (Kirkus Reviews)

"Engaging. . .. Comparisons to John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley are obvious, but this is an entirely different and equally rewarding piece of work that expands with each page without losing its narrative thread or the reader’s interest." (Publishers Weekly)

“A great read.” (Woman's Day)

“Here's a book you'll want to dog-ear. . . . Recommended reading.” (Country Living)

"A sparklingly entertaining portrait of the dog-besotted United States. . . . Casey is a good dog, and [Denizet-Lewis] is a good writer, and as Steinbeck knew, that’s always a bankable combination." (Steve Donoghue Open Letters Monthly)

"Unlike other dog books that focus simply on training or on an author’s personal experience, Travels with Casey gives us a little bit of everything—it’s an adventure tale, a psychological study, a history lesson, a trend piece, and a hard-hitting news story all in one. It’s funny, fast-paced, life-affirming, moving, and satisfying—in other words, everything a great road trip is supposed to be." (Gena Hymowech Lambda Literary)

Again, that doesn't mean this book was poorly written, it just wasn't what I expected based on the title.

Denizet-Lewis' writing style is so very easy to read, even as he tackles tricky topics.

"Travels with Casey" is funny, informative and thought provoking. I started rolling on the floor laughing on page one (actually, l was guffawing on the dedication page).

Denizet-Lewis' writing style is so very easy to read, even as he tackles tricky topics.

I found it hard to set the book down once I started reading!

Most absolutely wonderful! I am only a third of the way through this delightful book, and find is almost impossible to put down. I scowl at anyone who even speaks to me, but since I want this most enjoyable journey to last awhile for myself, I have forced myself to set the book down - for how long I will manage that, I can't say. Benoit has a wonderful way with words, has done such fabulous research, has put everything together in an entertaining and thought provoking manner, and, is clearly excellent at English grammar and punctuation. Wholeheartedly recommended.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It is well written, funny, and thought provoking. As an animal lover, I appreciated the treatment of serious issues like overbreeding that harms the health of a dog and the serious problem of homeless pets. The topics are an integral part of the narrative and are brought out in a meaningful way in the author's encounters with dogs and people. Not only do I feel as though I know the author, whose first person narrative is rich in detail and humor, but I fell in love with Casey and his new rescued sister Rezzy. The people, places, and dogs that they meet on their cross country journey are interesting and memorable. There is much to think about and love in this book. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys good writing, interesting and important topics, and, of course, dogs.

I followed the adventures of Benoit and Casey via Facebook as he was researching and gathering information for this book. I eagerly awaited the book's release, and I was not disappointed.By halfway through the first chapter, I was enchanted. I felt included in the trip around the country, their ups and downs were MY ups and downs. I was drawn to the story because of my love for dogs, but I don't think that's a prerequisite to enjoying the tale. I now yearn for a road trip of my own.

It's a love story, told effortlessly in such a way that I felt Benoit was sitting with me telling me his planed and surprise adventures during this travels accompanied by photos and short videos. Benoit is not competing with other writers who embarked on similar journeys but very naturally includes many in his narrations. Witty, smart, candid, sensitive. I laughed and cried - specially page 103- and the last few lines.

'Travels With Casey' written by Benoit Denizet-Lewis brings the story about a journey of a man and his dog, after which issue of human-dog relation would be much more clear for reader to understand, but also some tips would be learned how to best treat these beautiful animals.

The author who wrote for New York Times Magazine, embarked on the journey with his dog Casey - nine-year old Labrador - in a rented RV across the United States. Denziet-Lewis is a bit afraid that his animal companion is not very fond of him, but during their long journey of 13 000 miles in 4 months when together two of them will visit 32 states there will be a lot of time to learn how and why things are the way they are between them.

Still, do not expect classic journal that was transformed into a book, because author only partly speaks about his memoirs during their trip, mentioning as well many things about dog care and life in general within texts made by scientists and regular people, as he pointed out in the introduction of the book saying that “he wanted---he needed---to feel better about his dog."

These two are not the only characters of this entertaining and educating story; along their long trip they will meet lot of people and their dog friends, some of them very remarkable such as police officer companion, wolf hybrid or a pet psychic. Their adventures are anything but boring, retelling unusual and sometimes dangerous situations in which they two took part.

After their journey reader will realize that contrary to the general opinion, a lot more people need their dogs than vice versa, while dogs sometimes do not take us too much to heart, as long as we are nice to them and meet their basic needs for safe life.

A very enjoyable and informative summer read, and one I think can stand up as explaining dog in the USA for years to come. The book paces readers through the spectrum of emotional reactions--plenty of laughs that are balanced by some sobs just a few pages later. Benoit shows some real journalistic chops, threading his own narrative about his pup, Casey, contributing to his anxiety and often seeming non-plussed by his human with the growing business of dog culture and what it says about us. "Travels With Casey" is a real, true journalistic look at dogs, not just the simple premise of "guy takes road trip with his dog, laughs abound." My one caveat was Benoit's insistence on bringing in some romance elements to the narrative. They added nothing and interrupted the enjoyable, natural storytelling. Thankfully they are at a minimum but still worthy of an eye-roll. Overall, very relatable and something dog owners can really learn from and refer to.
