Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The angry ranting of an obscure, small-party politician, the first volume of Mein Kampf was virtually ignored when it was originally published in 1925. Likewise the second volume, which appeared in 1926. The book details Hitler's childhood, the "betrayal" of Germany in World War I, the desire for revenge against France, the need for lebensraum for the German people, and the means by which the National Socialist party can gain power. It also includes Hitler's racist agenda and his glorification of the "Aryan" race. The few outside the Nazi party who read it dismissed it as nonsense, not believing that anyone could--or would--carry out its radical, terrorist programs. As Hitler and the Nazis gained power, first party members and then the general public were pressured to buy the book. By the time Hitler became chancellor of the Third Reich in 1933, the book stood atop the German bestseller lists. Had the book been taken seriously when it was first published, perhaps the 20th century would have been very different.

Beyond the anger, hatred, bigotry, and self-aggrandizing, Mein Kampf is saddled with tortured prose, meandering narrative, and tangled metaphors (one person was described as "a thorn in the eyes of venal officials"). That said, it is an incredibly important book. It is foolish to think that the Holocaust could not happen again, especially if World War II and its horrors are forgotten. As an Amazon.com reader has pointed out, "If you want to learn about why the Holocaust happened, you can't avoid reading the words of the man who was most responsible for it happening." Mein Kampf, therefore, must be read as a reminder that evil can all too easily grow. --Sunny Delaney

Review

A Message from the Anti-Defamation League: Mein Kampf was Hitler's blueprint for what later became his war for world domination and for the extermination of the Jews and others. Written eight years before he assumed power in Germany, the book lays it all out: his megalomania, his conspiratorial obsession with Jews and his lust for power. For all who claimed they didn't know, all they had to do was read Mein Kampf to know of Hitler's intentions.

They say this is an excellent book because it really gives a deeper look into the mind of this monstrous man.

According to the Preface, this book was not written for the purpose to make friends or influence people. The design from conception is to chronicle a movement, not create one.

As a whole one can have an opinion as to the results of the book. However with out reading it the opinion has no chance to be informed. Another flaw with not reading this work is that you are relying on others opinions and inferences. Taking most of the statements and conclusions from this book and displaying them separately you would be surprised as to how many you would agree with.

Just a sample of what is on the inside:
"I know people who `read' enormously, Book for book, letter for letter, yet whom I would not describe as `well-read.' True they possess a mass of `knowledge,' but their brain is unable to organize and register the material they have taken in... For reading is no end in itself, but a means to an end."
These are not platitudes but examples of observations of the time, which you can see are timeless.

Once in a while the reading may seem redundant but it is the nature of writing for the time and place. So again this book is a must read. I have no preference as to translation; yet I must rely on them as the German versions require on knowledge of German idioms of the time.

If you are a history buff, especially during period before and during WW2 then you should read this book. Hitler revealed exactly the type of govt, his expansion ideas (via peaceful and/or violent means), persecution of Jews and disable, organization, the supreme race, etc. You will wonder why world leaders didn't recognize his intentions and actions and take positive action. Perhaps they were like me and refused to read this book because of hatred for this man or perhaps because they believed it was written by an insignificant little man early in his climb to power. Whatever, I recommend you read this book. If for nothing else, to read Hitler's formula for his rise to power; (1) public speaking (2) propaganda (3) recognizing and controlling the press (4) progressively terror tactics, and others. This could easily be warning signals for the public to recognize actions of politicians desiring power and complete control. I think some politicians are following Hitler's methods but not stating the source due to the world hatred for Hitler thus cause undesirable public opinions.

This is a must read for anyone interested in the first and second world wars. It is very much a book of it's time, and goes a long way to understanding the causes of both world wars.

The message sucks but the way delivered to Kindle was great and much better than having a book by Der Fuhrer lying around. Doing research for a play about the 3rd Reich so this was really great to get and so easy. Will delete when I am done with it though. Gave 5 stars for the ease of delivery though what it has to say is ponderous and insane.

I'm not sure I wanna give this five stars, but that's for the Kindle edition.

There are many reasons one might want to read MEIN KAMPF, but carrying it around produces all sorts of questions. Hence reading it in Kindle form is ideal for reading it on the sly.

The problem is, many of these public domain books are poorly formatted on the Kindle: absurd line breaks, typos, lack of paragraphs, etc.

This one isn't. It's professionally done as far as that goes.

Truly a great read. I recommend EVERYONE read this book and see the truth that Hitler was speaking. This book is quite hard to read though because Hitler, when explaining things in this book likes to give nearly every detail and while it may seem that he goes off on a tantrum he actually does not because after giving the background info he then goes on to explain how all this has an impact. This book is a great outline for the white nationalist movement, but this is definitely a book that should be studied not just simply read. It truly is terrible that all the historians have lied to us about this wonderful man who falsely accused him of ordering the extermination of jews which he did not do. In reality he simply wanted to preserve the german culture and the aryan (white) race. Anyways i hope you enjoy this book!....Sieg Heil!

I read Mein Kampf many years ago it is the diary of a madman and served as a warning to the world that he was about to instigate and conduct the most brutal destructive war in history. Hitler tells us not only what he intends to do but how he intends to do it. A warning from history that changed the world forever but allows us to bear witness the decline of democracy and the rise of a brutal dictatorship that eventually reduced Germany to a nationwide ruin.
