OK, this is not my usual genre. But someone handed me a copy and asked me to review it, they thought it was so great the word needed to get out. And, yes, I think they were 100% right. This is indeed a heartwarming 100% true story of Bret Baier and his six year old son's battle with congenital heart defects.

Paul has had three open heart surgeries (the first was at only 12 days old!) and seven angioplasties. (Minor spoiler- as of today, Paul is doing great, but there's doubtless more surgeries on the way). How he, his Father and the entire family has dealt with these and the other issues is a great tale of family care, endurance and of course work-life balance.

Not as 'glurgy" as you might think, it's wonderful how they overcome adversity.

Note that Baier has said he's donating all of his book proceeds to pediatric heart research, so this is a good cause too.

It’s every parent’s nightmare. You welcome the birth of your child, and within hours, the initial joy and exhilaration are shattered by the news that your precious newborn is suddenly in a fight for his or her very life. “A Journey of Faith, Hope, Courage and Love” is more than just a subtitle -- it’s truly the experience this book delivers as you are led through the medical challenges presented for a baby born with heart disease and multiple congenital heart defects.

Special Heart is not just another epistle from a high-profile Fox News personality -- it is deeply personal. It’s a robust serving of real life, fear, trepidation, inspiration, and perseverance by one of the nation’s premier television news professionals, Bret Baier, anchor of the top-rated political news digest Special Report on Fox News Channel.

There’s a great deal to like in Special Heart for both parents and Fox News fans. Baier deftly strikes a unique balance of his career path and rise to prominence at Fox News with the dramatic personal challenges he and his wife, Amy, face in dealing with their young son Paul’s seemingly insurmountable medical obstacles.

Woven throughout this well-written and highly readable book is the significant role the Baier family’s faith played in sustaining them through their darkest hours. This element of the story, which is neither preachy nor overbearing, is both moving and inspirational for those who believe in a higher being.

Through three open heart surgeries and seven angioplasties, the bravery and fortitude of young Paul Baier (now six), and his trust in his parents and his medical providers, shines through.

An engaging and extraordinarily personal tome from such a high profile Fox News pro. But THAT is what makes this book ‘special.’ While it predominately revolves around the medical challenges of Baier’s first-born son – it is anything but clinical. It brings to life the pure love a couple has for a newborn child, only to find things are far from perfect – that the child is in a fight for its life.

Woven into this loving and gripping journey to save their son, are inspirational examples of faith, courage and relief. This book is anything but sad. To the contrary, it’s pages reveal true episodes of triumph and perseverance that are quite inspiring. The reader is also treated to insights of major news stories of the times, behind the scenes goings on in the news business and Baier’s rise to the anchor chair in Washington.

I love happy endings – and this book delivers on that. Moreover, the book will help fund pediatric heart research. I’m glad I took the journey with Bret in this book.

I am a young guy with no kids but picked up this book because I’m a fan of Bret Baier. What a pleasant surprise! Yes, this book tells the heart-rending tale of Bret’s son’s battle with heart defects, but there is so much MORE here.

I expected a lot of clinical details and the like – but quickly came to appreciate the human struggle of spirit and faith that unfolds in its pages. I became truly engrossed as Bret alternates between what was happening in his personal life while meeting the demands of a national news anchor. It is quite an incredible journey.

As a news junkie, I appreciated the insights on major news stories, Bret’s career growth and the like. But the story of his son’s battle – the things Bret and his wife Amy faced – is incredibly moving and inspiring. This book does not disappoint, and really exceeded all expectations I had.

America’s most buttoned-down news anchor – unplugged. No studio lights, no TV producers, no make-up artists. Just the sound of a heartbeat monitor hooked to a little baby fighting for his little life. Behind the hurly burly of the Fox news studio – real life collided head-on with one of the most popular news anchors on-air today: Bret Baier.

Within 24 hours of welcoming their firstborn, a son, their world is turned upside down with the news their little one has been born with multiple heart defects. Crippling news for any parent, for any child, at any age. What takes hold, as the story unfolds, are moments of faith, determination and a family structure determined to rally in support of little “Paulie.”

If you enjoy being inspired, reading examples where faith can sustain you, and behind the scenes stories of the news business – this book is for you. So well written, I was surprisingly engrossed early on. There are a number of surprising turns that keep you engaged and interested. I know many of my friends will enjoy this book, and I think you will too.
