Editorial Reviews

Review

“Young returns to reflect on the two defining love affairs of his life: cars and dogs…. The plaintive and straightforward approach to Young's remembrances evokes a kindly paternalism as he candidly recounts details of his experiences forging his musical ambition in Canadian clubs, the hippie scene in Los Angeles, his later solo career and the innumerable rides that took him there…Both heartfelt and conflicted, Young's passion for cars is tempered by his environmental conviction, a prescient reminder that the Earth is more important than a hobby.”—Kirkus

“Now here’s a guy who takes the word autobiography seriously. This “outgrowth,” as Young puts it, of the Canadian singer-songwriter’s 2012 memoir, Waging Heavy Peace, is quite literally an auto-biography, a collection of reminiscences sparked by the author’s memories of the cars he and his family have owned over the years…he’s more outspoken regarding his views on politics and environmental issues... As an extra treat for his fans, the book is full of illustrations (of cars, naturally) done by Young himself. It’s an interesting approach to a memoir and despite the overlap with Waging Heavy Peace, the approach makes the material feel fresh.”—Booklist

About the Author

Neil Young’s music and songwriting—which span forty years and thirty-eight studio albums of rock and roll, folk, and country, with shadings of blues, techno, and other styles—are among the most enduring and popular in modern times. From his early days with Buffalo Springfield through his solo career and collaborations with Crosby, Stills & Nash, Crazy Horse, and dozens of other notable musicians and groups, Young is acclaimed for both his musical talents and his artistic integrity. With a major hit in every decade since the sixties, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. A well-known political activist, environmentalist, and philanthropist, Young has been involved in several causes, notably cofounding Farm Aid and the Bridge School, which assists children with physical impairments and communication needs.

Format: Hardcover
Reading this follow-up of sorts to Young's "Waging Heavy Peace", some readers may think "Cars, here we go again.". And they'd be right. Much has been said about Young's writings about his vehicles in that book. This memoir is largely built around cars and Young's memories of those vehicles, the time, and the place of each one. Deep fans of Neil Young will want this book. But more casual fans may want to have a look at it before deciding whether it's a a viable addition to their library. As I wrote when reviewing Young's previous book, this is Neil Young being Neil Young. Only more so with this new set of stories linking cars with various memories.

His writing style is warm, almost intimate, as if you're chatting with a long time friend catching up through the years. His personal way of telling a story is sometimes warmly felt, other times funny, and sometimes more straightforward when talking about his music. Young covers topics like his boyhood in Canada, family, musical influences, his own music, and of course cars. Long time fans know about Young's Lincvolt vehicle and Young's quest (and struggles) to vastly cut down emissions through his modifications to the internal combustion engine, and the car is a major point in the book.

Increasingly concerned with pollution and finding ways to hep save our planet, Young recounts his many vehicles--mostly old, some running, some not--and talks about how much pollution they release into the air. But intertwined with the "car stuff" there's some good insights into Young's life and outlook that deep fans will like. And his cars help spring memories of certain times, places, and events.
