"All young people—regardless of difference—deserve the things Jazz shares in her lovely book: a loving family, supportive friends, and the freedom to be their true selves. A beautifully illustrated and accessible primer on one trans girl's journey of living her truth."—Janet Mock, New York Times bestselling author of Redefining Realness

"I wish I had had a book like this when I was a kid struggling with gender identity questions. I found it deeply moving in its simplicity and honesty."—Laverne Cox, acclaimed actress and transgender advocate

"Jazz is a sensitive and courageous young woman. Her story is inspiring and important to read. By sharing her experiences and view she has added to our understanding and compassion for the transgender experience."—Barbara Walters

"A terrific and timely book that explains to kids what it means to be transgender and—more importantly—that reminds kids our similarities are much more important than our differences."—Jodi Picoult, New York Times bestselling author of The Storyteller and Between the Lines

I Am Jazz is honest, inspiring, and beautiful—but its greatest strength is it never apologizes for being different.”—Brad Meltzer, New York Times bestselling author of I Am Amelia Earhart

This is a to-the-point description of who a transgender person is. it is Jazz's true story. she wastes no words and simply explains how she is a girl as much as any other. This is a children's book and it is exactly how to tell young children about a trans family member.

It is worth noting that everyone's story is unique. This is one girl's perspective on a very wide array of other stories. My story as a trans person is different but the message, the explanation, is the same.

The illustrations are cute and appropriately support the directness behind the message.

This is not a social discourse of transgender science or ethics. Jazz, along with all trans people, has faced judgement and discrimination for who she is. Jazz is a person and can expect others to use the name and pronouns she identifies with; one's personal belief is irrelevant to treating others with respect. Hopefully Jazz's book can help others see that.

As a straight mom of three, I can honestly say that this book brought tears of joy to my eyes as I read it. It is a beautiful affirmation of the essential humanity in all of us, and it is a clear and age-appropriate way to introduce kids to the diversity around us. For those of you who are concerned that children might not understand or be confused by the concept, rest assured. Using my kids as a focus group showed me that they not only "get it," but they are much more open to these concepts than many adults.

This book is amazing. My 1st grade daughter read it aloud as we sat together as a family. Every single page was a gem! The illustrations are so nice and engaging. Jazz explains things in a way that people of all ages can understand a subject that needs more understanding at every level. This book will be helpful and educational for children and adults, for families with transgender children, for teachers, for EVERYONE!!!! I would say that this is a happy story without sugar-coating things or being preachy. It's really just right. We already have every book there is for kids on the topic of being a person who is transgender. This is by far the best!

This book should be in every elementary school and public library in the country. This is an important topic, but one that some parents might feel uncomfortable trying to broach with their kids--and this book is exactly the tool to help them do so in a simple, straightforward way that's age-appropriate and, indeed, plays to children's natural inclination to accept others at face value without getting caught up in all the nonsense that adults are preoccupied by.

How far we have come since Dick &Jane & Spot on the run....When it comes to an introduction to transgender issues this 5 minute read," I Am Jazz" written by Jessica Hertel &"Jazz" aimed at young transgender children and their immediate families hits spot dead center by providing both parents and young transgender children an inside view of Jazz's. inner feelings and her parents open-minded acceptance of the inevitable with help of professional guidance. This wonderful book which is beautifully illustrated gets to the heart of transgender issues despite its simplicity. In a nutshell this book tells the story of a family dealing with early discovery, early acceptance and early appropriate action in dealing with a child whose body is in discordance with her gender identity... I Am Jazz is perfect! Jazz and Jessica use simple and easily undertandable language to help kids understand what it means to be transgender. In fact, I think this book is wonderful for adults, as well. The explanations are so lovely, and truly get at the heart of what it means to be a transgender kid. The illustrations are adorable, and there's a page at the back with information about Jazz's foundation, TransKids Purple Rainbow Foundation.

A complicated topic written in a way children will understand. While this book is intended to explain a very grown-up subject to kids, I believe it should be read by all ages to help open the eyes of anyone who doesn't understand the mind of a transgendered person and what he/she knows to be his/her true identity. Bravo!

What an amazing way to talk to your children about transgendered people and explain how we are all the same inside! This is the beginning of a new generation, one that knows from a young age the struggle of LGBT and fights with them against prejudice, arm in arm. My children are going to be better people because of this book. Great buy for any parent!!
