Editorial Reviews

Review

"What better way to pay tribute to groundbreaking cartoonists than in cartoon form? Top contemporary illustrators including Drew Friedman, Peter Kuper, and Nora Krug chronicle the breakthroughs of iconic forbears such as Charles M. Sculz, Dr. Seuss, Robert Crumb, and Jack Kirby." (Entertainment Weekly)

“What a joy to see the raw, unvarnished insides of these handmade lives finally placed in the right hands: their heirs in art—masters who learned from the masters. How smart of Monte Beauchamp to cast their stories in the visual structures, color palettes, and signature rhythms of the very art forms that our strangest and best-loved supermen originally expanded to worldwide glory.” (David Michaelis author of Schulz and Peanuts: A Biography)

"At long last, someone has taken a refreshing and diverse approach to profiling the giants who shaped the cartoon medium. Penetrating, intimate, entertaining, and bittersweet... Beauchamp has given the world a masterful work." (Joel Surnow co-creator and executive producer of 24)

“Inspiration is cyclic – every cartoonist has a hero, a visionary colossus who ignites their own creative journey. Reading Drew Friedman’s account of how R. Crumb became his spiritual father is, in itself, inspirational, as are the many other memoirs contained in Monte Beauchamp’s celebratory collection of cross-generational comics creativity.” (Nick Abadzis author of Laika)

“What an imaginative and appropriate way for today’s cartoonists to salute some of their heroes. The result is a unique blend of love and irreverence.” (Leonard Maltin film critic and historian)

"[W]hat’s great here is really terrific." (Kirkus)

"Its hard not to love the concept behind this hardcover comics collection, in which top-notch cartoonists create comic biographies of some of the medium's biggest names (Edward Gorey, Charles Schulz, R. Crumb, Jack Kirby)." (USA Today)

"16 fascinating and artistically vivid graphic biographies of such notable cartoonists as Charles Addams, R. Crumb, Walt Disney, Edward Gorey and Dr. Seuss." (Tampa Bay Times)

"Finally there's a book that gives cartoon artists the attention they deserve.Masterful Marks features top illustrators, including Drew Friedman, Nora Krug, Denis Kitchen, and Peter Kuper. The book reveals how visionary cartoonists overcame financial, political, and personal challenges to create a new form of art that now defines so many elements of pop culture." (Complex.com)

“…this collection offers a praiseworthy sampler of approaches for other artists interested in doing biography comics.” (Library Journal)

The concept alone is brilliant. Biographies of 16 master comics artists who made their mark on culture, drawn in comics form by 16 contemporary artists who are now making their own distinctive marks.

From that concept Monte Beauchamp takes it a step further, pairing today’s creators with pioneering cartoonists in wonderfully creative ways. It would have been obvious to have Jack Kirby’s bio illustrated by one of the many Jack Kirby imitators, but Beauchamp chose Mark Alan Stamaty whose work couldn’t be more different. Walt Disney’s story, drawn by Larry Day, manages to be engaging and entertaining without any trace of Disney style or Mickey Mouse imagery.

Interesting creative choices abound as Marc Rosenthal apes the style of Charles Addams, and Nicolas Debon does an imitation of Winsor McCay, while others are virtual opposites of the artist’s life they illustrate. The combinations of artist and subject are delightfully surprising and fun.

In some cases the artists have the privilege of drawing the life of a cartoonist who was clearly an inspiration, such as Peter Kuper’s story of Harvey Kurtzman and Drew Friedman’s standout piece on Robert Crumb. Both Kuper and Friedman made themselves part of the story, adding a unique personal touch.

Each story is fascinating in its own way. Some of these bios have been told before (Siegel & Shuster) but many were new to me and some were even a little shocking, such as the story of Dr. Seuss by Denis Kitchen (who has been absent from the comics scene for far too long).

I recommend this book to anyone who admires the 16 master cartoonists profiled or the 16 equally great artists who drew their stories.

This book had great appeal when I first saw it on Amazon, and I am absolutely thrilled to possess it! It will eventually take its place on my bookshelf beside my Chas Addams originals, but that won't be for a while. There is so much to enjoy here in terms of content, but what grabs me most is the original conception of such a book which in my opinion is long overdue. "Who coulda thunk it?", a question that starts running through my mind almost immediately. Congratulations, Mr. Beauchamp! I keep thinking that beyond the great design of this wonderful book there is real curatorial genius.

Monte Beauchamp's new book, Masterful Marks, is brilliant and stunning. The artwork is superb and the storytelling is excellent. Beauchamp has taken the language of cartoons and has used it to tell the essential story of each of these remarkable cartoonists.

The illustrator for each biographical section evokes, rather than mimics, the style of its subject, which is a remarkable achievement. Beauchamp did a wonderful job matching the right illustrator to the subject, whether it was the lesser known, though no less significant, Rodolph Töepffer, illustrated by Frank Stack, or the internationally well-known Walt Disney, illustrated by Larry Day.

Beauchamp and every single artist in this book did a fantastic job.
