Editorial Reviews

Review

“Who was the ‘real’ Judy Garland—the diminutive woman who lived a life away from the camera? Judy Garland on Judy Garland is an intriguing and seductive look at the icon through the eyes of the fragile woman who lived in the shadow of her own stardom. At last, we can read what Judy Garland thought of her talents, her struggles, her achievements, and her life. This is the true story of an international superstar whom the public never really knew. Flirtatious, defiant, sympathetic, contradictory, funny, sad, and charming—Judy Garland.” —Michael Gregg Michaud, author of Sal Mineo: A Biography

“The Holy Grail for fans of Judy Garland! Randy L. Schmidt is the Indiana Jones of Garland archeology. Never before has Judy been given such a laser-focused spotlight to speak for herself—and like her greatest musical performances, she takes center stage and wows us with every phrase. Careening from the hilarious to the gut-wrenching, Judy will charm your socks off! This book is not just over the rainbow, it’s out of the world!” —Sam Irvin, author of Kay Thompson: From Funny Face to Eloise

“A fascinating, impressively researched insight into the heart and mind of a twentieth-century icon. It reveals the true nature of Judy Garland: the incisive wit, wicked sense of humor, and self-deprecating lack of affectation. Life was not always a bowl of cherries for Judy, but she was far from the tragic figure that many bandwagon biographers have portrayed over the years. Four decades of the divine Ms. Garland, in her own words, restored to humanity at last.” —Gary Horrocks, editor, Judy Garland: A Celebration, International Judy Garland Club

"Garland is often seen, nowadays, as a sort of tragic figure, a superstar who achieved great heights and crippling lows, but here we see her perhaps as she would want to be remembered: a eager, supremely talented woman who never stopped dreaming of a brighter future for herself." —Booklist Online

Thanks to Mr. Schmidt for compiling and editing this insightful, wonderful book. It is an absolute joy to read-I found myself at turns laughing at loud at Judy's sparkling wit and tearing up at the heartaches that she endured. I inherited a deep love and appreciation for Judy from my Mom, and this book only enrichened my awe not only of her talent but her courage, compassion and strength. Thanks again to Mr. Schmidt for giving Judy a chance to at last have her say-and her fans the chance to read it.

Having never had the opportunity to officially pen her own autobiography prior to her untimely passing in 1969 at age 47, this book is the closest thing that one could hope for from the legendary Judy Garland herself.

The book’s befitting title, Judy Garland on Judy Garland, delivers what it implies. That is, rather than presenting an exalted love letter or—alternatively—sordidly tragic tabloid fodder, author/editor Randy Schmidt serves a straight-up account of Garland through verbatim quotes and contemporary press interviews and encounters.

Mr. Schmidt does his due diligence in cautioning readers that Judy’s publicity was indeed largely vetted and otherwise controlled during the early days of her career by her then-employer, mega movie studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. But even so, one can certainly glean what was going on in the young actress/singer’s life and career at that time. By the late 1950s and 1960s, however, with her ties from MGM severed, Garland was free to speak uninhibited and candidly to the media . . . something she seemingly took advantage of wholeheartedly. Those accounts, as presented in the entire second half of the book, make for particularly intriguing (oftentimes humorous, courtesy of Miss Garland’s own wit) insight.

All of this makes for a fascinating read. To casual fans who merely know Judy Garland as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, there is much to be learned of the talented performer beyond her most recognizable role. For die-hard Judy worshippers, there is every reason to believe that they will have an even greater appreciation for their idol after reading “her own words.”

Kudos to Mr. Schmidt. In the absence of her own autobiography, I think Judy Garland herself would be pleased with this book.

One thing I love more than Judy's music and movies is hearing her tell stories. She was a brilliantly funny woman.
