Editorial Reviews

Review

“Told with unprecedented candor and wit. . . . Matt paints a vivid portrait of JFK Jr., that only a select few have ever seen, offering a touching and honest tribute to John’s legacy.” (Bookreporter)

“Berman seems to have saved every photo and scrap of paper from those days.” (New York Post)

“The author’s humor and self-deprecation make for a lot of fun moments as he takes readers behind the scenes of many photo shoots, dishing on celebrity behavior such as Barbara Walters’s playful flirtation with a notoriously disagreeable photographer. In addition, Berman details the creative process leading up to the launch of George.. . . Most noteworthy though is Berman’s insight into the character and work ethic of his late boss. . . . It is Berman’s palpable grief and musings on wasted potential at the loss of his friend that make this more than a celebrity-tell all.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Nearly 15 years after Kennedy died in a plane crash at age 38, Berman is looking back at those heady days and recalling his friend in a new memoir." (USA Today)

“Berman recounts his relationship with JFK Jr., both personal and professional.” (Library Journal)

“For a shy young art director, being hired to design John F. Kennedy Jr.’s new magazine was both daunting and exhilarating.” (Vanity Fair)

A perfectly-timed, personal, funny and fascinating look back on the mid-90's publishing world. I read it in one sitting. (Julie Klausner, Comedian)

I thought this book, while not written by a professional author, was a good one.

I have read many books on the Kennedys and JFK Jr. specifically. This is the only one that made me see him as a normal individual. I loved the stories of the ribbing and practical jokes JFK Jr dished out to Matt Berman and others. It is very rare that you read anything deragatory about JFK Jr. and he seemed to be honestly loved by all who really knew him. I also was glad to read that Carolyn was also a lovely person. She is so often depicted as an ice princess and did come across that way in many photos. It appears that she also was loved by all who really knew her. I would have liked to read more about her sister Lauren and how she interacted with JFK Jr.

JFK Jr seemed to be an old soul and taught life lessons to his friends in how to interact with people. He had a wonderful life that was cut way too short. This book brings out the human side of JFK Jr. rather than put him on a pedestal.

The book is also about Matt Berman, his life, and how he got to his position at the magazine George. I enjoyed the parts about how they decided on their covers for the magazine and how they went about photographing them. My only criticism about the book is that it was just too short. It left me wanting to know more and read more about this fasinating man and the people who worked and interacted with him.

This is a very touching and interesting book about JFK Jr. and his time at George Magazine. Berman offers great insight into the person he was, rather than the image many of us have of John, the icon. Both John and Matt are very interesting people and this book shines a light on both. I highly recommend this book.

An honest tale of how a decent and talented guy brushed shoulders with stardom. And how he had to compromise his standards because JFK, Jr. wanted a serif on a san serif type face. Berman's fascinating account of how he put together an outstanding magazine is told with honesty and humility--which is refreshing for someone in his field. Berman brings JFK back to life, and tells the life lessons his boss taught him. It's such a good read that you don't want it to end-- because we know how it tragically ends. John F. Kennedy, Jr. was portrayed as American royalty by the press. But we see that he wanted to be treated as a regular guy.

Humerous and honest. Mr. Berman has spared readers mundane anecdotes about "America's Prince" and weaved a glamourous and heart felt story of one of the most unforgettable chapters of his life. I laughed aloud many times during the book.

A book written by a friend about a friend. I've read all the books written about JFK Jr.Most of them give you insight into what his life
was really like. Kennedy just wanted to be a normal person and be treated like one.

Candid, Intimate invitation into a world Matt Berman is generous to share with us. I thoroughly enjoyed every word of this book and could feel the author's joy and pain. Wonderfully written for his friend from his friend.
