"Jackson gives a master class on true crime reporting in BOGEYMAN. He writes with both muscle and heart." --Gregg Olsen, New York Times bestselling author of IF I CAN'T HAVE YOU
"Absorbing and haunting! BOGEYMAN spills creepily across the page with Steve Jackson's hellacious verve and insight, reminding us there are few better explorers of the American berserk."--Ron Franscell, bestselling author of THE DARKEST NIGHT
"Steve Jackson's latest, BOGEYMAN, reveals a living, breathing nightmare that haunted parents, as well as detectives. Be sure to add it to your reading list if you're a fan of true crime books."Aaron Habel, host of Generation Why Podcast
"Jackson writes deeply... It's all in BOGEYMAN, a fascinating, well-paced read about the lows and highs of cold case investigations."--bestselling author and forensic psychologist Katherine Ramsland in Psychology Today.
"After having read his riveting MONSTER non-stop, I didn't see how Steve Jackson could top Steve Jackson with BOGEYMAN. I can't say he has, as they are both equally riveting. In BOGEYMAN, he doesn't so much focus on the monster he calls "the darkness," but on the fine detectives who made it their life mission to put an end to his reign of terror. I highly recommend both fine works!"- Diana Montane, bestselling co-author of MISSING & PRESUMED DEAD.
From the Author
I think what made BOGEYMAN unique for me as a writer wasn't the killer's story, or even the exceptional detective work that went into bringing David Penton to justice. The book gives us a poignant and powerful inside look at the emotional, psychological and physical toll a case like this has on the men and women of law enforcement, as well as on their families; those usually unseen, and rarely revealed, stories of courage, faith and sacrifice on behalf of the victims, the victims' families, and their communities.
Best-selling and award-winning author and journalist Steve Jackson lives and works in the mountains of Colorado. Born in Bethesda Naval Hospital in 1955, he grew up in Hawaii and Colorado. He graduated in 1979 from Colorado State University with a BA in Journalism.
A newspaper journalist for 25 years, he worked in locales as varied as Montana, Hawaii, Guam, Micronesia, Indonesia, Indiana, Washington D.C., Florida, Oregon and Colorado. During his career with newspapers, he received numerous national and regional awards for feature writing and investigative reporting.
As of August 2014, he has written nine non-fiction books in true crime, history and biography genres. His first non-fiction book, Monster, a true crime, was published in October 1998 and within two weeks became a NYTimes bestseller. In 2003, his World War II dramatic narrative, Lucky Lady, received The Colorado Book Award, best biography/history, from the Colorado Center for the Book; Lucky Lady was also the runner-up that year for the Admiral Samuel Morrison Naval History Award.
Just released on August 5, 2014 is his latest true crime, BOGEYMAN, the story of the manhunt for one of America's worst child serial killers and the tenacious Texas lawmen who brought him to justice.
He's also written eleven crime thrillers in collaboration with former New York City assistant district attorney Robert K. Tanenbaum.
In June 2013, Jackson joined a forensic investigative team searching for the remains of the Grand Duke Mikhail Romanov in Perm, Russia as part of his research for an upcoming dramatic history FINDING ANASTASIA. The team will be returning to Russia in June 2014 to resume the search.
Outside of writing, his interests include backpacking, fly fishing, skiing, guitar, reading, softball, music, wine, beer and spending time with his family and friends.
As expected, Steve once again delivers an excellent read. Particularly touching is the story of the dedicated detectives who devoted a part of their hearts and souls to bring justice to the victims and their families. The murders were the beginning of unimagineable grief and broken hearts and spirits that would never heal. Steve has told this horrific story with dignity and grace for those involved and really made their emotions come alive.

A fascinating read... having personally interacted with the men and women who keep us safe, this a worthy tribute to all that they do! Keeping the rest of the world informed is not always met without controversy. I myself have had a family member murdered, we all deal with the grief in different ways. My hat is off to you Mr. Jackson!

This is the true story of a vile sexual predator who abducts, assaults, kills and throws away children usually 4 - 8 and girls. One of the better rendition of the police officers who must face situations that tears their hearts and guts apart, but who with tenacity work countless hours to bring closure to cases for the victims families. The setting is in the Dallas Metroplex circa 1985 through 1988. Additionally, the victims families and the heartaches that they suffer for the remainder of their lives is well chronicled. One can only imagine the anxiety and anguish that the families must endure. Recommend as a good emotional read.

This is a must read. This book reminds us that there is such evil in this world as David Penton, and that to this day still exists. We must take extra care and know at all times where our children are and that it's a must that we do not take our eyes off of them even for a split second cuz that's all it takes to change our life in the most horrendous way. If not for the persistence of detectives Sweet, Bradshaw, Phillips and Meeks this crimes may not have been solved. This poor girls at such a young age, youngest 3 years old were taken by this evil pedophile. Not only did David Penton kill this "Little Angels," but he also ruined many lives. I especially felt for Detective Bob Holleman whom after "the call" not only lost his family, but ruined his whole life. Truly a sad situation for him and his family. For some of us who think that this detectives do not care, after reading this book it will change. My hat off to Steve Jackson that wrote this book in such a manner that you don't lose the story amongst all names mentioned in the book. He takes you through this book like any other, and it's very hard to put down.

I lived the story, know many of the officers involved. What a great story about great police work and also a sad story for the families of the girls that were taken. Monsters exist. But so do monster hunters.

This subject falls outside of my usual reading interests, first which are nuclear physics and astrophysics. However, the brief description of the book piqued my interest because many of the logic skills used to identify a criminal are applied in investigative research in science. So I decided to give it a try.
First, this book refutes the idea of the neat, nice, solved in one-hour crime drama on television. Most of the time, that is simply not the way the system really works. The book covers a two decade obsession by police to catch a clearly insane but very clever, organized serial killer. Much of it occurs in the era before DNA testing was available.
It is heavy on facts and details but, more importantly, communicates the agony of those involved. What struck me most about this book was the collateral damage, the price paid by good human beings caught up in the tragedy of the case. It is entirely logical that parents and close family members would be affected terribly by the loss of a child. However, the total destruction of other lives, including friends and most surprisingly of all, police, caught me completely off guard. Watching police families disintegrate and individual policeman fall apart due to their perceived inability to catch this monster was heartbreaking. There were no winners, only losers. Worse yet, the villain gained his greatest psychological reward from enjoying the pain of others. The author's ability to communicate the pain his characters had to endure was to me the most important part of this book. It really made me empathize with all those who were affected by these events, many of whom suffered lifelong paranoia and other lifelong debilitating psychological effects. Some even committed suicide. I definitely felt their pain.Read more ›
