Relevant to today’s Christians
Elizabeth A. Dreyer is professor emerita of religious studies at Fairfield University in Connecticut and an adjunct professor at the Hartford Seminary. She has written seven books on such topics as women’s spirituality, theology of grace, the Holy Spirit, and contemporary lay spirituality. Her latest, Accidental Theologians, introduces four female saints who have been declared Doctors of the Catholic Church. Dryer opens with a general chapter explaining the designation Doctor of the Church, the meaning of theology, and the emergence of women theologians. The next four chapters are devoted to highlights of the theology of each of the saints covered:

Hildegard of Bingen - Theology of the Holy Spirit
Catherine of Siena - Theology of Incarnation
Teresa of Avila - Theology of the Human Person
Thérèse of Lisieux - Theology of the Cross

These chapters begin with an overview of the life and works of the saint. Dreyer then provides details on the development of each one’s theology in the context of her times. Next, the author places the theology in today’s context. The chapters close with a theological reflection with questions and suggestions to help readers incorporate the saint’s theology into our own lives.

A final chapter addresses several themes found in the works of Hildegard, Catherine, Teresa, and Thérèse that seem especially relevant to the twenty-first century, among them an invitation to become theologians and reliance on experience.
