Editorial Reviews

Review

“There are moments of immensely appealing self-disclosure that seldom appear in other books of this genre. . . . This isn’t your mother’s political memoir.”The New York Times Book Review

“With her new memoir, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand seems to be taking a page out of the presidential playbook. . . . In style, however, Gillibrand’s book differs significantly from previous political memoirs. Hers is a quick read, chatty, candid.”The Washington Post

“In her poignant new memoir, Off the Sidelines, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand gives a voice to our nation’s unsung heroes—and shares how any one of us can help change our world.”Good Housekeeping

“Since joining the Senate in 2009, Kirsten Gillibrand has been a fearless advocate for women. . . . Now, she’s turning her attention to getting women involved—a powerful message delivered in her new memoir.”Marie Claire

“Candid and inspiring.”Dr. Oz The Good Life

“Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, in offering this compellingly personal account of her journey to the U.S. Senate, fulfills a vital public purpose. Writing in a voice that is honest, funny, blunt, and strong, she urges women to get off the sidelines and start changing the world.”—Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and founder of LeanIn.Org

“What do you get when a woman is the third generation of fierce, kindhearted, and brilliant political activists? You get Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who writes irresistibly, helps in real-life terms, and uses her clout to get more women elected. Off the Sidelines is one of the most helpful, readable, down-to-earth, and truly democratic books ever to come out of the halls of power.”—Gloria Steinem

“Kirsten Gillibrand has written a handbook for the next generation of women to redefine their role in our world. With Off the Sidelines, Gillibrand shows that it’s not about getting to the top, or choosing between career and family—it’s simply about getting involved. In politics, in our communities, or simply mentoring somebody: When women work together, we all win.”—Arianna Huffington, editor in chief of The Huffington Post and author of Thrive

“My good friend Kirsten Gillibrand has written a book that is just like her: bold, impactful, and inspiring. In these pages, women will learn what is possible when we find the courage and ambition to lead.”—Gabrielle Giffords

“Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s story will prove instructive to anyone who wishes to find her true north, understand power dynamics, and confront entrenched interests when justice is not served. Off the Sidelines is required reading for all women who want to change the world and recognize that to do so they must better understand political realities.”—Piper Kerman, author of Orange Is the New Black

“Reading Kirsten’s book makes me so proud—as a woman, as an American, and as her friend. She is a beautiful example of what we can become when we are true to ourselves and brave enough to let our voices be heard. This book is intimately honest and deeply insightful. It should be on every girl’s and every woman’s reading list, and every boy’s and man’s, too.”—Connie Britton

“Kirsten Gillibrand is one of the most forward-focused leaders we have working on our behalf, and Off the Sidelines is an excellent example of inspiring women to make their voices heard.”—Billie Jean King

“A must-read for every woman looking to effect change. Gillibrand’s secrets to speaking up—whether you’re striving for political office, aiming for the boardroom, or simply trying to improve your kid’s school—are powerful lessons for women looking to make a difference. After all, if you’ve worked hard enough to gain a seat at the table but you say nothing, that’s a lost opportunity.”—Ursula Burns, chairman and CEO, Xerox Corporation

“Senator Gillibrand is a vibrant role model for her generation and makes a strong and very personal case for why we should all care about our government. Her trademark honesty and humor speak loudly to why we need women in the game.”—Geraldine Laybourne, founder, Oxygen Media and Kandu

Gillibrand was first sworn in as United States senator from New York in January 2009, filling Hillary Rodham Clinton’s seat. At turns inspiring, engaging, and enthusiastic, Senator Gillibrand's new book is both a recounting of her journey to become New York's junior Senator, and an impassioned call for arms for women empowerment and engagement. Combining both political recountings and personal stories, Senator Gillibrand reveals warmth and honesty, consistent with her reputation as a champion of lost causes.

The book itself is a quick read, clocking in at fewer than 200 pages. It is written with a light candor, with Senator Gillibrand freely discussing her thoughts on modern day feminism, how she finds strength in her personal life, and how she faces challenges both personal and political. The openness is refreshing - Senator Gillibrand holds nothing back as she expresses her frustration and disappointment with the failed vote on the Military Justice Improvement Act, how overwhelemed and impassioned she was as she faced down the difficulties of helping New York recover from Hurricane Sandy or ensuring that the first responders during 9/11 received proper health care and compensation, and how personal challenges, tragedies, and setbacks only inspired her further.

Whether it is discussing the difficulties of giving birth while being an active member of the House of Representatives, or forcefully arguing for the advancement of women's rights, Senator Gillibrand's book "Off the Sidelines: Raise Your Voice, Change the World" should be hailed for exactly what it is - an open and honest glimpse into the life one of the rising stars in politics, and someone who firmly believes in the endless possibilities of women.

For what more can you ask? But you are given more, I was surprised.
Kirsten makes no secret that she is an advocate and who she is advocating for, but in this era of partisan fundamentalism she leaves one believing that to her politics falls a distant second to advocacy.
A reader who is expecting a political message is more likely to find an ethical one. Positions do change but people are who they are. Senator Gillibrand is here to stay and for that, America is lucky.
Good read.

I have always liked Kirsten Gillibrand and admired her for all of the different issues she has taken on. Oh a whim I went out to Barnes and Noble two nights ago to buy this book in particular. I read it the next night in one sitting. I had meant to just read the first chapter and make it an early night, but I couldn't put it down. It's a quick, easy read, but full of good stuff. Lots of personal stories and experiences while also making very clear where she stands. She's not telling her personal stories for the sake of you knowing what happened in her life- she's telling them to show how she dealt with them, and she's telling them to allow as many other people as possible to see themselves in her stories, and know that they are not the only ones going through whatever they're going through and dealing with whatever they're dealing with. Also, and probably most importantly, this book's clear message is that each person must believe in the worth of what they have to say, and that by standing up and speaking up is what it takes to start to change things for the better. A quick and worthwhile read!

The author hopes this book will inspire readers into "action" for better public policies. She shares her experiences and provides lessons she has learning in attempting to "create the counts we want and deserve."

The following are notes from the books for Political Science students:

Gillibrand was inspired by her mother, Polly, a politically active woman. Both derives inspiration from her grandmother, also named Polly, who worked as a secretary for the New York state legislature. Her grandmother helped recruit secretaries and place then with legislators. Her grandmother wore roller skates to get around the Capitol. The grandmother was active with the Albany County Democratic Women's Club and led a group who called themselves "Polly's Girls", who circulated petitions, organized rallies, campaigned, and fund raised. Polly was close to Albany's Mayor Erastus Corning. Polly defended the local political organization, claiming it was not a political machine, remarking "It's not a machine! It's a well-oiled organization. A machine has no heart."

GIllibrand went to Dartmouth and then UCLA Law School. She found herself inspired hearing Hillary Clinton, which motivated her to go into politics. She held a fund raiser for Hillary Clinton's Senate campaign She then was hired to work for the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department.

Gillibrand decided to run for Congress. Political experts told her a Democrat couldn't win in her district. She went to three campaign training schools. She took a poll that showed that while the Republican ncumbent John Sweeney led her by 57% to 19% that half the Republicans were undecided on the race.
