Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Poor Nugent. Reality has hit her—and hard. Armed with a degree from Emerson College (and thousands in unpaid loans), the snarky twentysomething must now figure out how to make her way in the world. It certainly doesn’t help matters that she’s moved back in with her parents. Seized by panic attacks, Nugent spends her days looking for meaningful work and a place to live. Along the way, she joins an online-dating service, but the “match-dot.coms” of the world aren’t typically inclined toward the offbeat, so she ends up with potential suitors who are hopelessly dull. Nugent, creator of the comedy blog The Frenemy, is committed to helping quirky girls feel good about themselves. This wry offering is at its best when she focuses on her own struggles to that end, including a longtime obsession to be thin. She likes to eat too much, Nugent says: “So yes, I have a tummy. I don’t always love it. Sometimes I really hate it. But I am going to acknowledge it, and I’m going to deal with it.” --Allison Block

Review

Praise for DON'T WORRY, IT GETS WORSE

“Reading DON’T WORRY, IT GETS WORSE is the equivalent of spending an evening out with your funniest friend. Nugent keeps you laughing from start to finish—even her asides are gems.”
–Rachel Dratch, Saturday Night Live cast member (1996-2007) and author of Girl Walks into a Bar

"Charming…Nugent is a confection of fabulosity, a sharp and hilarious mind that falls a little bit in love–and a little bit in hate–with the ridiculous world around her. Her observations on post-collegiate life are somehow both cutting and warm, and all the more wonderful for it. "
–Sara Barron, author of People Are Unappealing: Even Me

“A bracing whiskey shot of a book. Equal parts hilarious and tender, DON’T WORRY, IT GETS WORSE will have you laughing out loud on one page, and tearing up ever so slightly on the next. Alida Nugent is wise beyond her years.”
–Meghan Laslocky, author of The Little Book of Heartbreak

"Touching and relatable." –BUST Magazine

"It will make you annoy your lounge chair neighbor with all your LOL-ing." –Cosmo, "Books to Pack in Your Beach Bag"

"Nugent's voice comes across as loyal and tough, and her sense of humor and authenticity will appeal to readers going through related chapters in their own post-college lives. This book, like one of its myriad cocktails, is dry, dirty and surprisingly refreshing." –Kirkus

"
If Liz Lemon’s younger sister existed, she’d be just like Alida Nugent: a little bit awkward, perpetually single, and defiantly weird." –Book Riot

“[Nugent’s] essays are warm, funny slices of postcollegiate life, including amusing and helpful bits of advice from a very real person.” –Time Out New York

"Honest, real, and hilarious." –Shelf Awareness

“Humorous… [with] wickedly crafted insights.” –New York Journal Books

"Painfully hilarious, eye-opening and breathtakingly well-written. Nugent is a force to be reckoned with...we’ll be hearing from her for years to come." –DishMag

"Depressingly realistic and hilariously offbeat....Nugent is not afraid to tell the truth, no matter how ugly it gets." –Brooklyn Daily Eagle

Don't Worry it Gets Worse is a riotous good time. Super fun to read, Alida fills the book with hilarious anecdotes and insights into 20-something life. Whether or not you are a fan of her popular Frenemy blog, this book will 100% have you laughing out loud and make you feel less bad about eating cheese in your underwear.

I rarely come across a good read that thoughtfully combines the cynicism I feel towards the people of my generation, the ideas of my generation, and the outcome of my twentysomething failures so far. This collection of essays accomplishes this; it's necessarily critical, yet serious; gritty, yet motivating and inspiring!

I found this book so hard to read, but forced myself to sit through 3/4 of it, since a friend had recommended it.

The good: Alida Nugent is a good, funny writer, with a strong voice, who will undoubtedly write great pieces as she continues to develop her talent. Her admissions of personal embarrassments are all the funnier bc she knows and you know that they're typical of many twentysomethings in her position.

The bad: Scattered moments of self-deprecation and we-all-do-it candor are great, but a book full of stories of self-loathing and shame just comes of as whiny. It's like being forced to sit through a self-pitying conversation with that friend who (albeit funny) always feels herself to be the victim of the world. Luckily, while you have to smile and bite your tongue with friends (or be strong and tell them to snap out of it), you can just put down this book and walk away.

As a recent college graduate, who also happens to be woefully underemployed, this book really hit home. I read the sample and thought "this is just what I need", little did I know that aside from providing the laughter I needed (along with the "I'm right there with ya" chuckles), it provided me with some insight into my own life and the kick in the butt I needed to move forward. But mostly, it just made me happy.

Have you ever read a book that felt like it was directly speaking to you? This is that book. For me, at least. I graduated from college about 2 weeks ago. A week later was Christmas. My sweet, endearing older sister got me this book as a gift. Not sure if it was a gag, or a sincere note towards the impending doom of my post-graduate future, I accepted it with grace and added to the things I would be reading with the immense amount of free time I had in the coming weeks (the weird in-between of graduation and job seeking is a very strange, unknowing time). When I cracked open the book for the first time I became unruly excited because Nugent gives the reader a list. Not just any list at that - I wouldn't want you to think I have some sort of weird list fetish. This list is composed of yes/no questions to answer to determine whether or not this book is for you. Of these questions Nugent poses, some include "Would you rather feast on hummus or cheese than have sex with somebody who doesn't read books, drinks protein shakes, or has a goatee?" and "Does your college degree hang over your head like a rain cloud made of student loans, false hopes, and rapidly falling dreams?" and best of all: "Liz Lemon?" - I properly exclaimed "yes, yes, and YES" to these questions along with many more like some sort of crazed lunatic you'd find gnawing on her arm in the corner of a subway wearing a tyedye cut-off and pants with feathers (that's a thing, right?). Then I agreed to embark on reading this novel, and not halfway like the lukewarm relationship I have with many books where I reach 50 pages, figure I've gotten the jist, and never pick it up again. No, this book was different. This book I'd done something I so rarely do.Read more ›

I should be a little nicer and give it a three stars for a quick read.
Pros: the obviousness of telling it like it often is. Cons: yeah, we know life sucks, but do I want to read about it so you get money? I'd rather read my roommates diary TYVM.
I'd recommend this to someone who has very very dry humor and is HEADING to their twenties - to make sure to NOT make certain mistakes.

It's a book I recommend you take to the beach or on a subway commute! The girl is just funny! She writes from the heart and makes you laugh outloud not only at her but at yourself because you've been there! Her style is reminiscent of Gilda Radner. It's a feel good book!
