About the Author

Peter Rogers MD started out as one of the worst students at Stanford and went on to become one of the best, winning the Student Athlete of the Year Award with straight A's in pre med classes. He went on to U. Illinois medical school with 99% boards score and then Northwestern with another 99% boards score and then on to Harvard. He has studied and experimented with learning and thinking methods for 30 years and puts all this information into this book for you. The key concept is to train a student and or thinker as one trains an athlete, to develop the skills of learning and thinking.

More About the Author

Peter Rogers MD like Charles Darwin has waited over 20 years to publish his theory.

His theory is that students should be trained in academics like athletes are trained in their sport and that performance on standardized tests is an indicator of how well an academic athlete is trained.

This book is relatively unique in that it helps you to develop the skills of learning and thinking. Methods for increasing the speed of learning and retention of information are discussed.

Peter started out as one of the worst students in all his classes at Stanford and went on to become one of the best. He studied the methods of the best students, read all the books on memory and learning techniques and developed his own methods.

In this book, he summarizes 30 years of experience in academic performance optimization.

Peter was recruited to Stanford as an athlete and then got injured and recycled himself into becoming a great student. His coaches were the World and Olympic Champion Schultz brothers, Mark and Dave.

Peter analyzed what makes athletes great and then adapted this to academics. Dr. Rogers is also a neuroradiologist and has incorporated his knowledge of neurophysiology into optimizing academic performance.

Peter earned the Student Athlete of the Year Award at Stanford and then went on to earn 99% board scores while at the University of Illinois Medical School and again 99% while a resident at Northwestern.

He then did an imaging guided surgery (interventional radiology) fellowship at Harvard and a neuroradiology fellowship at Rush.

He has been diligently studying the science of learning, memory, brain processing speed, teaching, nutrition, and performance optimization for the past 25 years.

Each individual method makes you a a little bit better student, but in aggregate, they make you a much better student.

I have to say I was not sure what to expect from this book. I wanted to learn how to optimize my mind and ways to focus more on the tasks at hand. When I started reading, I was hooked and pleasantly surprised. This book is incredible and a blast to read. It has humor, antidotes and very positive energy flowing through it. The techniques and advice are easy to understand and best of all, they make total sense. It covers so much information and answered all of my questions, even ones I didn't know I had. It is a long book but once it grabs you, the length seems almost inadequate. It ended too soon for me. I love the format it is written in and how light the reading really is. It is not just for students and academics, but for everyone. We never stop learning and this book lets you train your brain to learn faster. It shows how to retain what you read and learn with much more ease. I know a lot of people try to cram for tests and exams, hoping to fit it all in and pass. The tips in here make you cram as you go and with simple referencing your knowledge and mind are opened and it is not so stressful. Peter Rogers really impressed me in his style of writing and I love the passion he shares throughout the book. He shares personal experiences and made me laugh several times. I would love to read more of his books. I definitely recommend this book to everyone. It is most enlightening and really is a delightful read. Learning can be fun!

I wish I read this book 32 years ago. Although I graduated from a prestigious University and a top graduate school myself, when I read this book I recognized skills and techniques which would have enhanced my competitiveness and success if I used them. Dr. Rogers' admission that when he started Stanford and the University of Illinois Medical School - he expected to do well, but at first did not do well, struck a nerve. He recognized that the effort which sufficed at the previous level - was not enough when the competition increased. He adapted, he improvised - he learned techniques to succeed at the highest-level. The book teaches techniques, which applied with discipline, will provide the recipe for a motivated student. The fact that Dr. Rogers states that he was not "born" a Straight A student but used techniques to become one - give hope to any motivated student.

The best parts were the chapters on thinking thru complex problems with the emphasis on perception whereby one has to be willing to adjust their assumptions. There were a lot of good quotes on thinking for the purpose of solving complex problems.

I also enjoyed the sections on social intelligence such as that marriage is more likely to be successful if based on friendship than love.

The book was kind of long and the chapter on walk and talk methods went on and on. I wish the pages were numbered. It was not that big a deal because most of the chapters were only 1-3 pages long.

I liked the story parts in the first part of the book. One really gets a sense of what it is like to be a student at Stanford. The 2nd half of the book was more technical and kind of dry, but it did go into a lot of interesting stuff.

Training the mind for academics is similar to training the body for athletes. Exercise, repetition, and to truly succeed, coaching. This book draws those parallels and offers the coaching. Through humor, anecdotes and quotations, and his own personal experiences, the author presents tools and methods for better and more efficient learning. The book is divided into many very short sections with each presenting a single concept and how to apply it. As a whole it is a comprehensive guide to mental fitness, from attitude and lifestyle to nutrition, which can be applied not only to the serious student but to anyone seeking to raise their potential.

This is a very interesting and unique book. The chapter on the magic bathroom was kind of bizarre, but very helpful. The concept of speeded up learning thru speeded up reading and video viewing was great. I wish I had found out about this book sooner. I recommend this book for all motivated high school and college students. The flashcard techniques are helpful. This is a detailed book. There is a lot of information here. This book could be used for a semester long class on how to become a better student and thinker. I am glad that there was also information on creativity, academic public speaking and on how to write better.

This book is a must-have for studying, test-taking, speed reading or even to sharpen your skills as a learner in anything in life. It gives a fresh way of thinking /looking at learning new material. Dr. Rogers also throws in several jokes and shares many personal experiences, which makes this a fun read! I especially like when he suggests using headphones while reading to block out the noises around you. This would have helped me so much when I was a student because I was always easily distracted by everything around me.
