If you like well-researched books about significant historical events and have any interest in the United States Coast Guard then buy this book right now. In the interest of full disclosure I am a retired Coast Guard veteran so perhaps Douglas Munro means more to me that to the average person. Still, long before I joined the Coast Guard I enjoyed history (and still do). The author's in depth research is evident throughout the entire book. By the time you get to the finish you feel that you know the key people and events quite well. The entire Guadalcanal invasion is presented in excellent detail. There are also some additional Coast Guard sections that are certainly worth reading. I've been looking forward to this book and I wasn't let down. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down until I finished it.

I was interested in reading the book as I live in Cle Elum, Wa the next town to where Doug Monro lived, South Cle Elum. My folks knew his folks but I was much younger than Doug. My father told me years later that he was the Lay Reader at the Espiscopal Church in Roslyn, Wa. at the time of the service and that he was asked by the Monro family to perform the church service for Doug. It was very thoughtful for my father to be mentioned in the book. It was a well written book with all the information and pictures I was told about when I was growning up. I thank Gary Williams for writing it and telling the story of Douglas Monro and Doug Shehan for his help also. I also agreed that it should have been a movie.
