Praise for Ted Kooser’s Local Wonders: Seasons in the Bohemian Alps

“Kooser is a poet by nature, and his essays have the generous feel of a man who’s rolled up his sleeves, pen in hand, for a long time, choosing words as an act of beauty, and knowing the small things of the world are of great import.”—Bloomsbury Review

“A quietly eloquent diary of a year in a small town in Nebraska. . . . This is a heartfelt plainspoken book about slowing down and appreciating the world around you.”—Janet Maslin on CBS News Sunday Morning

“Clear, generous, and imaginative, Local Wonders increases the sum of the world’s best goods.”—Patrice Koelsch, Speakeasy

“Through his eyes we learn to see, then appreciate, the beauty and grace in everyday miracles, the comfort and sanctity in local wonders.”—Booklist

Readers who purchase this volume of Kooser's prose will be familiar with the author's previous work and will be neither surprised nor disappointed by Ted's latest effort. It is a compendium of brief musings, trenchant observations, and haunting word paintings by an American master. Those of us similarly adrift in a septuagenarian lifeboat will recognize that the insights gleaned are often touched by the bittersweet realization that we are rapidly approaching the distant shore. Nevertheless, his frequent glances toward the past are tinged by love and not regret and make this a work to be comfortably revisited on those many occasions when sleep does not come.

For many years I have been a fan of Ted Kooser's books, both poetry and prose. "The Wheeling Year" did not disappoint. He has the most wonderful way of painting pictures with words and I reread his books frequently, usually a chapter or page at one time and let the images that come to mind rattle around in my head, savoring them with such delight. As a fiber and mixed media artist, I am amazed what he can do with words that I attempt with paint, fabric and other materials. I have waited for a long time for a new title and am thrilled to find this wonderful one.

*The Wheeling Year* has been a study in writing the seasons. But, before writing comes noticing and with noticing comes a metaphor. This is Kooser's gift and it's a gift he's sharing with me in these pages.

The gift doesn't transfer exactly. I don't see things like Kooser and may never see them his way. But I feel my eyes opening. Mr. Kooser is showing me how to see. He's teaching me by sight how to become alive and call out the life that flourishes right where I am.

This is profound spirituality and Kooser is a gentle, soft-spoken prophet of God. "If you have ears, listen. If you have eyes, see."

Classic Ted Kooser small paragraphs of prose poetry that describe life, aging, nature, rural life and how consciously viewing even simple aspects of our lives can be meaningful. Reading selections from journals he kept for many years is inspirational for those of us who want to take a few brief minutes each day to pause, reflect, and write simply. I have already read bits of this book multiple times as I go through each day and try to write a paragraph.
