From the Inside Flap

On February 19, 2007, SSG Shilo Harris was patrolling an infamous southern Iraqi roadway when his Humvee was struck by an IED. Moments later, three members of his crew were dead and Shilo had sustained severe injuries that would alter the course of his life. For forty-eight days he lay trapped in a medically induced coma as his wife, unable to ease his suffering, had to come to grips with a man utterly changed.

Through more than sixty surgeries, countless hard decisions, and the unwavering devotion of the wife who would not leave his side, Shilo discovered that he was being reshaped--within and without--into the person he was meant to be all along. His inspiring story will move you and motivate you to live boldly in the face of fear and trust God to pull you through the toughest of times--no matter what.

From the Back Cover

"Staff Sergeant Harris has made a choice not embraced by veterans of wars past to talk and talk and talk about what he's experienced--a soldier turned messenger. He leaves crowds standing at attention, as he honors his friends who have fallen."--August Skamenca, reporter, CBS News

"In Steel Will, we see what happens to an ordinary man in extraordinary circumstances. We see what happens when an ordinary man rises above a bleak prognosis, when an ordinary family surrounds their hero with love and hopefulness, and when an extraordinary, miracle-working God places his hands on the one he loves."--SFC Leroy Petry, United States Army Medal of Honor recipient

"This book should be required reading for every American, especially our youth. Shilo Harris is a true patriot and an American hero. This book embodies the essential spirit of America by reminding us that being a hero isn't always judged by your accomplishments. It is often judged by your sacrifice so others can have their accomplishments under a blanket of freedom."--Ric Savage, former professional wrestler and television host

"SSG Shilo Harris, in his writing, has exposed his soul like no other author. His life is open and raw, revealing his unwavering faith, his clear understanding of the risks of war and its heartbreaking impact on all those who are touched by it. Steel Will is a book that will emotionally rip you apart but will have you cheering at the end."--Fred Gregory, Air Force Vietnam vet, astronaut, NASA Deputy Administrator

"I thought my story was tough. But reading Steel Will put me in the fire, in the coma, and on the rocky road to recovery. When the last page was turned, I felt honored to know the man of Steel Will, Shilo Harris."--SFC US Army (Ret) Dana Bowman, HALO for Freedom Warrior Foundation

This book is an awesome read, although it is sometimes difficult to get through. I did a lot of crying as I went through this terrible tragedy with Shilo and his men. So proud of Shilo and Adam for getting through this journey in life and also want to thank Shilo's beautiful wife for being as brave a soldier as they were as she traveled her own journey by being a soldier's wife, nurse, friend and spouse. She is such an inspiration to all on the other side of war in this story. I can't say enough about Shilo and his will to survive. May God bless all who are written about and unspoken in this book.

Steel Will is a well written and informative book. I had my eyes opened to what war does not only to a soldier but his family. Reading this book helps to educate us all. To know why a war is fought. Hardships people face in the war zone especially our military. A very good read.

Everyone should read this book about what our soldiers go through to defend our country and our freedom. I had great respect for anyone that served in our armed forces but I never had a clue as to what they went through while they were serving. Shilo Harris's book gave me a glimpse as to what happens to these men and women and what their families go through. This book made me laugh, cry, and think about how lucky I am to have people like Shilo defending our country.

After the 9/11 attacks Staff Sgt. (Ret) Shiloh Harris was motivated to enlist in the Army and to go to war. This book tells how he survived an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) explosion and how it affected him and his men. It makes the reader aware of PTSD and how the general public can help those affected and their families.
Something I liked about the book was the glossary printed before the first chapter. This is very helpful to the reader who knows very little about military life. There is also an extensive list of recommended organizations and ministries in the back of the book for warriors and their families to get the help they need.
The chapters are short yet concise. Several colorful photographs are included in this autobiography. They highlight several of Shiloh's key life points. Including a picture of his childhood in 1974 through his career as a military combatant.
This book shines a light on the tragedies that military individuals bear witness to or encounter themselves on a regular basis during their time in war. In America we tend to take our freedom for granted and also fail to realize the significant sacrifices and the burdens of those who are overseas fighting for that very freedom that we are able to enjoy because of them.
This was an interesting book to read because it was written from the perspective of a retired soldier (Shiloh Harris) who gives his own personal account of the events in this book.
I believe it is both beneficial and important to read first hand accounts because you get to "hear" from someone who was actually at the scene when the event occurred. Therefore, their account would logically be the most factual written piece of their own experience. This book captivated me in such a way that I did not want to put it down.

SUMMARY:
Having withstood childhood with a father suffering from PTSD due to the Vietnam War, Shilo Harris enlists after the 9-11 tragedy. While in Iraq, his Humvee is struck with an IED setting off such an intense trial of survival. Through many surgeries, extreme pain, heartache and hard decisions, Staff Sgt. (Ret) Shilo Harris realizes perhaps this is the man God intended him to be…

A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:
Incredible! Steel Will is so appropriately named…after the many difficult ordeals, anguish and suffering endured, a strong will, his committed family and faith in God is what brought him through it all. As a true role model, a team player, a compassionate educator, a father and a husband, Shilo Harris is also a genuine American. Though raised by his father for the service, his success in the military came from pure heart. Well written from a story obviously well lived and told, Steel Will will bring you to tears as well as make you smile. Thank-you Shilo…to both you and your family!!

RATING:
5 (out of 5) pennies
